Blocks with the casting number 3970010 were used in Corvette's in '70-'72, and maybe later (I only have the numbers handy for chrome bumper cars). It is a 350, which is consistent with your engine stamp starting with a "v", meaning Flint Michigan. All of the '70-'72 Corvette stamps ended with 3 letters, the first of which being a "C", so I don't think we are talking about a Corvette engine here. There are others around that know more about the Chevy engines used in Camaros and such, hopefully someone will weigh in with a better answer.

seems the code doesn't match the block, code is early sixties and block is late sixties to late 70's. Possibly "HU"?!?!?!?! The date would match, Apr 2 1968. What's the casting date of block?

1969 350CID; HV indicates a generic GM passenger car. HV could also indicate a 1965 Corvette 327/350, but the block casting number is wrong.

Having trouble with suffix HV outside of a '65. I'm thinking maybe an HW? I have trouble reading these on the block sometimes. HW would be a '69 350 hp. Corvette.

I think it would help if you gave us the VIN that is stamped on the block next to the the "HV" number you posted. If it's a Corvette VIN, then I would say you have a 69 Corvette L-46 "HW" code.

3970010 first started production in April 1969 ...

This block would be one of the earliest produced.
V0428 decodes to Flint Michigan, April 28, 1969.

Assuming the HV is correct ...
HV = 1969 350ci Impala 255hp LM1 TH350 4Brl Hyd Cam

you can confirm this by checking the casting date located on the passenger side, rear, opposite the 3970010, and right behind the distributor.

PS ...HV was also a 1965 Corvette suffix, but not appropriate to this casting number.

-------------------------------
That casting date may look something like D209 .... ???
