Default Batteryt Terminals

In my haste to post a request about which terminal to connect to the positive post, I failed to mention that I have an injured back and cannot crawl under my 74 Vette. I, not thinking, removed the battery thinking the positive cable would be red. Wrong! They are both the same and I cannot tell which one is the positive cable. I think it is the one closest to the driver's door, looking aft but I am not too sure. Please help an old senior citizen resolve this problem!

Do you have a VOM (volt ohm meter). Check the cables for ground continuity to determine which one is neg.
On my '71, the positive cable is closest to the drivers door. So when I'm leaning my old body in there to connect the cables and I'm looking towards the rear of the car, the neg. is on my left and pos. is on my right.
My cables are original. Both are black but the pos. side has a red connector.

unless a 71 is different than a 69, I just did a frame off on mine and the negative cable goes thru the bottom of the box and is CLOSEST to the drivers door!!!

The positive cable goes out the battery box toward the front of the car and down the driveshaft tunnel and to the starter

See the hole in the lower right hand side in the pic, thats for the negative cable

Now I am talking cables here not location of the battery or how it sits in the box as you could spin it around I suppose but when I ran the new oem cables the positive ones length was a perfect fit going in the way I have it.

My 72 has the ground cable on the right and the positive cable on the left. Checking with a meter is the best way to find out which way your car is wired if you don't want to or can't get under the car.

Normally things are pretty obvious (red is (+)) but someone may have altered yours. The meter is an excellent idea to avoid a nasty mistake.

Fonz69 showed it well. The (+) cable exits to the right (inside) area of the compartment and the (-) ground exits down through the bottom on the left (outside). Perhaps a shaving mirror can help with the viewing.
