Default Tracking VIN numbers

Hi, Does anyone out there know how to track down previous owners or history of vettes prior to 1980? There are no sites that I can find to track history of cars of this era due to no carfax info, etc. Thanks!

There is no service that provides this. The only way is to track down prior owners one by one. Unless like in my case on the of the dealers my car went through will not give me the info and documents they have. At that point your at a brick wall.

I sent away for a Indiana DMV report of the 70 that I used to have.. sometme around 1995, it came back with about 6-7 owners and got me all the way back to 1980 then the car was in Ill. so that is where I stopped..

that was before all this privacy hallabaloo started, I bet no one can do that anymore and get data form the DMV.

They provided Names and addresses, but blocked out the SS numbers if I remember right..

The drivers protection act of 1997 has really made this tough. You used to be able to do a title search and get back copies of all previous titles. No longer.

There are companies that specialize in this. Check Hemmings of google "title search".

Hi Dan,
The NCRS publication, THE DRIVELINE, has a section of ads called 'Information Wanted'. These are people looking for their car's history and previous owners. If you become a member ($35) you get a free ad, 6 times a year!!! Give it a try.
Regards,
Alan

Not so. Depends on the state. You have to fill out a form and check off one of about 6 reasons you want the info. You also have to agree you won;t use the info to contact the person. I got the info on my 70 last month with owners info back to when it was sold in 72. Last year I got info from indiana on a 69 Camaro with registration info from the mid 80s.

Start with the DMV in your state and take it form there. Privacy laws vary form state to state and the information available to you might be limited.

Second approach is to contact the person who sold the car to you and see what he/she knows about the folks who owned your car before he/she did.

http://www.corvetteactioncenter.com/...x.php?cmd=area Go here and see if you can obtain a copy of the dealer invoice for your car. The invoice will list the original equipment on your car, when it was shipped from St. Louis, the original receiving dealer, and other useful information.
