Outer Plug shields - Should I have them?
I have an 71 LT-1 with an AM/FM radio (no-stereo) and want to know if there should be outer plug shields mounted to the exhaust manifolds? There was no sign of them when I took the motor apart but it was already molested when I got it. I have referenced the assembly manual and it shows only 1 on each side over the rear 2 plugs. I have looked at other reference sources and they show 2.
I thought I remembered reading only Stereo equiped cars had these shields but can't remember the source (maybe I am dreaming)

Let me know if any one knows for sure.
Thanks,
-Brett
"For 1970 small blocks up to s/n 14,073 there are four (4) spearate chrome spark plug shields also attached to support brackets with chrome wing bolts. Beginning with s/n 11,015 the spark plug shielding only covers the rear pair of plugs."
What is your production number? You may have a late build car which did not have the rear shields. The manual did not differentiate between small block base and L46 engines and the LT-1. It only spoke about the difference between small block and bb models.
I hope that answered your question!
If the car did not have a radio then there was no (outer) shields on the car or the lower V sheilds, but they still had the heat shield (inner) for the manifold & spark plugs.
Hope this helps.
I looked at your profile and see you're "going back to stock".
If you don't have the NCRS 70-72 Technical Information Manual and Judging Guide, you should really get one. I think you'll find it VERY helpful and VERY interesting.
The picture of your chassis is great. Is that your assistant or supervisor?
