i was talking to a local car fanatic who used to clean cars for a living. he told me use polish, not wax because wax dries in sun and will leave a white dull residue. is this true?

Use a good polish to clean the paint and do corrective work and a good sealant to protect it and enhance the shine. Zaino makes a great line of polishes with varying degrees of cleaning/correcting capabilities and some great sealants.
ZPC Fusion for corrective work
Zaino All in one
Z2
Z5
Clear Sealant

Z8 grand Finale.
Your car fanatic doesnt know what he is talking about and I would hate to have paid him for a detail..
Do your own research in the car care discussion forum. You need the protection of something other than a polish.
he asked if i drive it in rain. i dont, so he said a wax is not needed. he said just polish and then a sealant just like CAPEVETTES said. reccomended using a product called ice in between polishing. anyone else have an opinoin on this? thanks. KAROL, WHERE is the car care section? thanks.
scroll down a bit on this page until you come to the hihlighted bar that says "forum jump" and click on that and then scroll down until you come to the "car care" section and click on that
Bottom of this page. Forum Jump. "car care discussion".
You didnt mention sealant in your first post that is why I said what I said.
Wow, learn something new every day! I did not know that forum jump existed either Thanks Karol.
I have found that Meguires polish can really deepen the color of your car, and hide buff and light scratches in the paint. I have used it with and without a wax cover with good results.
Unfortunately, I think most people use "wax" as a generic term meaning spreading some kind of protective liquid or paste over a car a couple of times a year at best. It's pretty much newbies here and other sites along with those of us who take the time to learn how to do things right and use quality products and know the proper terminology.
I have known guys that think the best "wax" for your car is whatever is on the clearance rack or dented and damaged shelf. At least they make the attempt to care for their vehicle. One guy in particular I knew said his car only got washed when it rains. After a couple of years he moans about the poor quality of factory paint when his clear coat has turned white and is peeling off. He just doesn't get it...it takes some effort to maintain a vehicle.
I'm old school...I like a high quality carnauba wax. I know synthetics have come a long way since they first made their appearance and are in some cases superior. But there are superior carnauba waxes as well and I'm happy with what I use. I also know that the technology doesn't stand still. The wax or polish you buy this year is not the same as what the same manufacturer will sell next year...they're always reformulating their products and trying to make them better. I can change the brand of wax in the future...I've done it before. It has to be proven to me it's better before I spend any money on a new product. That can through you guys here at Corvette Forum and at car shows where freebie samples are given out and I try it.
Where you live can make a difference. My cars are garaged and only get driven in nice weather. Long term durability is nice but not a prerequisite for me...it's the look as well as protection I want. Being garaged, my cars get clayed, polished and waxed before the previous coat wears off anyway.
If I lived in a climate like Arizona where my in-laws live, with that sun and heat, I think I would use a quality synthetic...I believe it would be better than my favorite carnauba wax under those conditions.
