i had to replace my cam, i used a stock cam, also changed, lifthers, push rods, all caskests that i undid, pluse water pump, oil pump, rad., hose's, blets....anything that came off......went back new. now Iam not sure on setting the valves, i tigthen them untill the clicking stopped, then half turn more.....now the clicking stoped but some of the rockers are a little loose, not sure about the timing, my friend was trying to find somthing to unplug so you can override the computer to set timing, we feel it is close.....but the big question is......the rpm's....when not in gear, 700 seemed ok to me but my friends feel this is too high, when he sets it lower by turning the dist. and i put it in gear, it wants to stall. what is the correct idling for the crossfire
Set the idle by adjusting the timing? You need new friends- the ones you have are NOT helping. the idle is set by the computer on your 82. There is a label under the hood that tell you how to set timing- there is a connector close to the distributor that is disconnected, timing is set, and the connector hooked up. Don't quote me, but I think it's green color.
The computer senses the timing and will also adjust it as it can unless it's out so far it can't make the range. that's why you set the initial timing with it in the bypass mode (connector unhooked). after all that, there is IAC (Idle air control) and TPS (throttle position sensor) that have to also be in a specific range to get it all to work together, and then there's the oxygen sensor that has to be warm enough along with coolant temp to get it into closed loop.
You really need to get the SHOP MANUAL which is specific to the 82. I would suggest that you set the TPS sensor as this is what monitors the throttle position. The shop manual is about $100 bucks but it's worth every penny.
Good Luck

I would try Ecklers, Mid America and all the others. I would even call them and ask if they are negotiable on their price. It doesn't hurt to try and save a buck at these times.
Good Luck,
Steve
The big parts companies will charge you $100+ for a manual; check ebay, there are a few on there now starting at $30. I bought 2 of them over the years, one for home and one to carry in the car - paid $25 for one and $40 for the other.
Good luck!
