I just saw a very nice '69 convertible for sale. Besides some of the
minor things it still needs done, the only thing that's stopping me from
making an offer is that the car did not come with power steering.
Is it possible to convert the car to power steering? If so, is it expensive, does it work well, and what does it do to the value
and originality?

When I bought my 68 it didn't have power steering. I bought a used setup at a swap meet for $200. It's easy to install but make sure you get everything including the pitman arm and the bracket that goes on the frame. There are more expensive ways to go but if your on a budget , this will work fine.

Some of the catalog and internet parts vendors have assembly diagrams that show just about everything you would need to do an as original conversion from non-PS to PS. You can also install other more modern systems than what normally came from the factory. I understand that the modern systems work better ... but I have no first hand knowledge of that. You can buy new or rebuilt parts ... and you can save money (about $230) on rebuilt stuff if you have a rebuildable pump, cylinder, and control valve cores.
Here is a list of everything that I know of that you would need to do an as original conversion:
Pump Assembly
Pump Pulley
2 Pump mounting Brackets
Pitman Arm (you will need to replace existing)
Relay Rod, also called Drag Link (you will need to replace existing)
Cylinder
Cylinder Shaft End Bracket w/ Mounting Reinforcements
Control Valve
Pressure Hose
Return Hose
Extend Hose
Retract Hose
Main Drive Pulley
Drive Belt
PS Fluid
Mounting Bolts, Washers, Nuts, Clamps, etc. (these may come with the main parts that you need)
If you decide to buy the '69 and are interested in doing this conversion, I have a few parts that are listed above that I don't need. Please feel free to PM or email me. Good Luck.
...Is it possible to convert the car to power steering?...
Sure. You can go with aftermarket power steering which will probably devalue the car, or you can go with the factory power steering set up. Not original, but also not aftermarket. All the Corvette vendors sell the stock add on kits.
...If so, is it expensive...
Depends on where you get the parts. Add on kits are about $700-$800 and will include everything you need except the labor.
You can also use the assembly instruction manual (AIM) as a reference for parts and part numbers and put together your own "kit" from salvage yards and ebay
