I think I posted here a while back about me getting a '76 Stingray from my uncle. Well I have several questions and there are a LOT of search results for "popping sounds"..lol. I know nothing about a lot of what's under the hood of this car. I consider myself fairly competent to do some parts replacement as recently I had to do an entire engine replacement on an '04 Dodge Intrepid with that lovely DCX 2.7L POS. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Oh, and I'm a college student and on a budget, and this will be my daily driver...
1.) Lately there has been a popping noise coming from the drivers side wheel well when taking off or going from Park to Reverse, or Reverse to Drive. I can come to a stop light, and when I let off the brake and give it a little gas, it'll pop once really loud. Sounds really bad. I've replaced CV joints on all my Toyota's and someone said that this was a u-joint problem. I have no idea where it's at or what it should look like, so...???
2.) It has a rough idle sometimes and sometimes it doesn't. It's odd. When I first crank it up in the morning, I'll let it idle for a little while and warm up, then when I come to that first stop light it idles sooo smooth. Then later in the evening when I get out of class, I can crank it (it'll still be a little warm from earlier) and come to a stop light, it idles rough. I hope it doesn't concern the carburetor, those intimidate me..lol (too many adjustments, i'd rather it had TPI).

Popping noise could be ujoints: there are SIX of them going from the tranny to the rear wheels. Usually when ujoints go bad, they throw a cap when the retaining spring breaks loose. If this was the case, you would also have some pretty bad vibrations as well when up to speed.
I don't know enough about the engine history to help you there. How many miles are on the engine, any modifications, and/or what's been done to the motor to date are all qualifying questions...running rough could be anything from a dirty carb, ignition issues, or even internal engine problems...just hard to diagnose over the internet...DDBS

That is exactly my problem then, because it does shake pretty badly at about 45+ on acceleration.

Well, I was just talking to a friend on the phone and he said to get some new plug wires and see what that does.
