I have removed the upper & lower A arms from my car to install bushings.
I had planned to have them powder coated after they are stripped since simple paint is so prone to chipping or easy to scratch.
But last week at the last car show of the year for me , A man told me powder coating was a waste of money. He said he had powder coated parts in the past and it flaked of and was not any better than paint in his opinion.
So now , I do not know what to do. The A Arms are way too hard to remove to screw up on a good durable finish.
Whoever did the guys PowderCoating didn't know what they are doing. I've had many parts and even frames PowderCoated and the stuff is hard as nails and lasts.
i painted everything with a rust inhibitor then rustoleum..... i also had some parts powder coated but the douche' that did them couldnt lay an even spray...
Powder coat is hands down superior to nearly any other type of paint.
application is the key to a good job, especially on used parts. watch who does the work, ask around for a good local shop.
Rattle cans cause brain damage!
Its all in the prep work. Whoever did his stuff must have done a terrible prep job.
Or not baked for long enough or at the correct temperature. I powder coated all my front end compnents and they came up great. I knocked them around a little bit re-installing them and they stood up ok.
Go with the powder coating. If you find someone reputable to do it, you'll have nor problems at all...
You could always give it a go yourself too. It's cheap enough to get set up and the results are very satisfying...
with everything both Stinger 12 and Saudivette said. I have been doing my own powder coating for the past 2 years and never a chip or crack in the many things I have done. If you take your time and prep your parts right - you'll hit a home run every time. Each point is critical - the prep, the temperature, cook time AND the curing. All are equally important in doing a good job.
Rebuild the front end on my 71 and at the time we were doing a job at a powder coating plant and got all my A-Arms, radiator surround cross member and other items powder coated for free. They did a great job and still looks great today after 4 years.
Only draw back is car was judged at a showm and points were taken off for powder coated items that should be painted.
Powder coating is far more durable than any paint. We have done it for 10 years

Any feed back from experience will be a big help

Hello David just to let you know powder coating is far more reliable and durable to paint. If you prepair the parts correctly and bake them at the right temperature for the correct amount of time it should last almost forever. If it gets banged around real badly you may get a scratch or chip but that is very rare. We have been doing this at VBP for almost 10 years now. We take the time to prep it and bake it in a high heat oven. While I am not going to lie we have had maybe 2-3 complaints in that time and most of that was due to the parts being mishandled during shipping the boxes were torn open and banged around. This is 2-3 out of countless of thousands we have done in this time. We took care of this with no questions asked and kept the customer happy. If you find some company to do it just make sure they clean the parts and that there is no debris that will show up in the coating as it will stand out. We also use a high quality powder from a reputable company. Just like paint you get what you pay for. You can see what it looks like at our web site if you like VBANDP.com Hopes this helps
