Regarding the build sheet (corvette Order Copy)
Should the ident No. in the upper left corner corespond to the VIN number?I have the order copy from my car and all is correct ,except the ID # and the VIN dont match. Any answers would be appreciated. Thanks,Rick

No. Not on the older cars. (These days it might.) It is my understranding, the ident number for the older cars was entered in Detroit after an order for a new Corvette was received. It was for internal tracking purposes only and did not correspond to the VIN.

This document you have is it Landscape or Portrait in form? My build sheet has the VIN in block 9. The document should be landscape in nature with block 9 in the UPPER Right Corner. In Block 9 only the actual build number of the car is in typewriter print, the first part is computer generated that's because the vehicle production Identification number was added on the assemply line.
Also it helps if you state what year you are talking about. The form changed design over the years. Below is an example of the landscape form document used in later years to date I guess.
Here is my build sheet for a 1981:

The Ident No. (identification control number) was assigned by the St Louis factory and printed in the upper left hand corner of the Corvette Order Copy. It had (factory) its in-house system for job identification and its relationship was indirect to the VIN. The factory transitioned to the landscape type manifest (true build sheets) in 73. As you've correctly stated...before 73 it was a copy of the Corvette Order Copy...a sales document.
I'm guessing you have a pre 73 Corvette...but not as early as 67.
I have a very early 68. Oct 23 67 build.435 / m-21/ black-black-black-black. 35,000 orig mil4es ,although I think they may have been put on 1/4 mi at a time!! Bought the car years ago and am just now getting the time to restore it. The interior is in very good shape ,but it was painted yellow some where along the line. The person I purchased it from gave me the "build Sheet" and everything matches except that one #. Thanks everyone for the info. rick
The last 3 digits of the VIN should be hand-written in "grease pencil", or less 500 if over 500.
Also, the last 4 digits of the VIN are usually hand-written in regular pencil.
