Default Center Cap Prices

Does anybody know what happened to the price of replacement center caps over the past year or so? I originally priced them at $125 for the set and now they're $899! (both prices from Ecklers) There's got to be a story behind this. Can somebody enlighten me?

Callthe supplier "The Last Detail". They are in Atlanta - and I think they will be cheaper.

I think "The Last Detail" also has a store on ebay, you can try checking there too.

I have a friend here in Tucson that has a bunch. He may sell some good pieces for $35-50 each. These would be very good drivers, maybe not show quality. debtanker@msn.com

Make sure you are getting something remotely close to the original. $125 for a SET of 4 is probably plastic. They do make plastic ones - they are nice and light!

Those are new stock replacements, not repros and not plastic. Go ye therefore to Ebay and surf for a set.

You can find new GM parts for about $600/set. The plastic ones are less than $100 per set, but don't have the writing on the outer edge of the 'cone'.

Thanks Everyone! I now have a number of different avenues to follow. Does anyone know if '72's shipped with the derby caps that have the bowtie in the middle? My three remaining ones don't have them, but it is kind of a cool look, but I wouldn't want to have incorrect-year caps.

I think the ones with the bowtie are aftermarket repros. My brother-in-law bought some of them for his chevelle. I agree they do look cool.

How do these center caps go on / come off? Mine are messed up but I don't want to take them off without knowing how they are supposed to come off. Thanks!

Grab the outer edge and yank it off with your hands. Tap it on with a rubber mallet.

off is easy, on can be tough if you don't know the secret trick that I learned on this forum! The 3 tabs on the center cap do NOT make an equilateral triangle. There is an easy way to put them on, and a very hard/impossible way.
