i've seen a trans case break like that before, a buddy of mine has a 1954 5 window chevy pick-up. we were goofin off with it after throwin a 75 shot of NOS on a stage 3 355, made a terrible boom/crackcrack noise, and didn't go anywhere anymore, that trans was also a junk yard find. other than my buddies, that video is the only other time i seen anything like that.

Could have been fractured before you bought it.It could have been in a bind or not solidly butted up the the back of the block. You could have had something like a bracket or wire or something get between the block and tranny before you tightened it down.

I had a trans do the same exact thing in a 71 camaro I had. I drag raced the car regularly, and it had a 500something hp 12.5 to 1compr. 350 and a th350 tranny, rebuilt, B&M transpack with no vacuum modulator and a 5500 stall converter.(Yes I drove it on the street).

Any way, at one point after couple of seasons I noticed a small leak that for the life of me could not find the source of. To make the long story short, after a while tranny finaly blew up and when I took it out it had the same crack going across it.

I attributed it to many hard launches with slicks on the strip and street.

I dont know how that could happen on a what appears to be fairly stock vette.

Any insight from tranny experts would be cool as this is only the second time I have seen this, and my curiocity is peaked as to reasons for this type of failure

Either way you should get your money back.

Could it be the seller of the trans raced it? Could the damage already have started without notice befor you ever installed it in you car?
