Default strange find on block

I have been cleaning ans stripping the old paint of the block anh heads from my 71 350 motor as part of this winters project.

The front of the block looks more silver and the sides look grey.

Just seemed strange that the entire block would not be the same color.

Also found 1182 crank shaft and O rods.

Thanks
David

Hi David,
Happy Thanksgiving, a day late
I found a similar condition on my 71/350. I thought that perhaps I had done it by using a soft brass brush and wire wheel to clean and prep the block. The brass seemed to 'polish' the cast iron.
If you look carefully at the picture you can see how silvery and shiny the rear of the block is above where the bell-housing mounts. ( The scan doesn't show the shine as much as the original picture does, bummer.)
Having Fun?
Regards,
Alan

PS: Notice the twisted off bolt for the spark plug wire guide bracket. It did come out pretty easly.

Happy Thanksgiving to you Alan.

We had a great time , Samantha ( our oldest daughter) came home from Wilmington. She had thought she would not be able due to her job.

As for the car, I had become little burned out on the engine bay and that is why I moved to the motor for a couple of days.

A very important rule to follow in my openion is...

Take breaks and do not spend hours and hours at a time on the project.

The over load can lead to sloppy mistakes.

I have the block and heads in primer, I can now set it aside for a while.

Thanks
David

Alan

Just thought of another question.

The Freeze Plugs, did you removed and replace or did you clean the paint off after painting the block Orange , or did you leave painted?

If you replaced , is this a simple process or something a machine shop should do?

I am thinking of replacing with brass plugs. But mostly for the contrasting look of the brass against the Orange paint.

Or at least cleaning the paint off of them when finished.

Thanks
David

I'm not Alan, but brass freeze plugs are better. It's not too hard to remove/install freeze plugs. Just be careful. Punch one side of the plug with a flat punch, like a 1/4" punch. Don't use a center puch, or a chisel, no matter how careful you think you can be. When it's twisted about half way in the block, vise grip it out. To install, I use Permatex around the edge and tap it in with the correct size impact socket. There is an installation tool too, I just don't have one

Hi David,
BBT's advice is right on.
Remember the plugs would have been painted originally. So it depends what 'look' your after as to whether or not they get painted again.
I agree that it's good to have various jobs to skip to, so you don't get too warn-out on 1 thing.
Regards,
Alan

PS: Here's 2 pictures I posted a few minutes ago in another thread. They're from about 18 years ago. I was detailing the compartment, engine and suspension with the engine in and the body on. When I finished it all, it still wasn't the way I wanted, so the body came off and the real craziness started.
