Default Side pipe Muffler Question

Hey everyone. I know this has been betean to death, but I did a search and couldn't find the specific info i needed...

Basically (i know this may sound stupid), my sidepipes are too loud, based on the townhouse community that I live in, and the hospital I work at. Bad enough, in fact, that a petition has gone around my community to ask that I only drive my car during certain hours because it is disruptive when I leave and return. Nevermind the freaking poodles two doors down that bark thier heads off all night long and nobody says anything...

Anyway, because of my situtation, I am looking to get new mufflers for my sidepipes, to "tone down" the sound. I guess I have to choose low sound over high performance at this point. Anyone have any ideas as to the optimal muffler for relatively quiet pipes, while still retaining some quality to the sound, without sacrificing too much performance. I am open to any suggestions that anyone has.

P.S. i have a '69 with ls1 swap and hooker pipes

Thanks everyone!!

Some good info here. You need baffles that slide up inside your sidepipes.

What mufflers do you have now, if any? The Spiral Turbo's are not overly loud and don't restrict the flow.

thanks for the input guys....
i guess i'm getting somewhat mixed reviews.
i read earlier that the spiral baffles are pretty loud, to the effect of setting off car alarms, etc., but performance-wise from everyone on these forums its sounds like they are awesome. i'm hesitant to drop 300+ dollars only to find them too loud.

does anyone know how they compare to the 2" sweet thunders? (sound and performance)
thanks!

Again, what are you using now? I have tried all the Hooker mufflers and can give you my comparo of them vs the Spirals. I have never tried the sweet thunders.

Not to jack his thread, but I am looking for the opposite. Loud, and free flowing. My old ones must have had the hooker glasspacks, but they were relatively quiet at idle, and although loud at WOT, were harsh. They really didnt sound awesome at all, at idle.

Im interseted in something deeper and throatier like this:

If you want loud, get the Hooker Max Flows. They will make your ears bleed and sound bad a$$ at idle.

My Hookers have the original mufflers that came with the headers and pipes through Jegs. I think they sound the same as normal dual exhaust cars. I don't know the part numbers but I guess you could Google it through Jegs or Holley.

Yes, Ive considered running with just empty tubes and no inserts at all, but I thought that might be pushing things.

Anyone want to chime in on that?

If you don't mind the noise violation tickets and you can stand the noise yourself... go for it! Open headers is L-O-U-D but some people like it...

I have the STS baffles. They sound really good inside the car, I can still talk and hear the stereo just fine. They were louder than I expected, but now I'm thinking of drilling the center cap for a little more sound. I think the ones that set off the car alarms either have large hole drilled in the caps or are high compression motors. Here is how my L48 sounds. About halfway through the video you'll hear the sound from outside the car:

Redman do you have a clip without music so I can hear the exhaust better? I have glasspacks in mine right now and I don't like them thinking about sts baffles.

Try this one Syco . . . I was able to find my source files plus some others and put into a clip for you. The first part of the video is with open pipes. Then I have a couple of drive-bys and an in-car video with the STS baffles. Hope this helps!!!
