I have a friend with a rich history of racing older Camaros, a Lola he owns, and various other cars. Let's just say that he's very well known and respected on some other forums. He has these tires on his wife's Camaro and says they run lap times almost as fast as the race tires she uses at the track. The race tires are more comfortable to drive fast because they don't have the tread squirm of a street tire but the times are very close. He's very impressed, much like George is.

Makes me wonder if I could get those 275/40-18s on all 4 corners somehow.

Les, I cut a front slick during a race day and to finish I put on new 255 Kumho's. The problem is: as with any unshaved tire is when put to the limit the tread block lay over and it just grinds the tread blocks away. I completely destroyed them in a two, half hour sessions and that was taking it easy after the first session to try and make them last.

I don't remember an exact time off the top of my head, but I would guess it was 6-10 seconds a lap slower. Treaded tires just don't have enough rubber on the road.

IMO - if a car can run nearly as fast with street tires....... I would probably say that the car has a lower power to weight ratio and the racing slicks being used would have to be narrower in width like 8 inch rims

George,
The car is essentially a street car that they use for autocross and the rare track day, so it's far from a dedicated race car. She's a helluva driver and has been very successful at the national level in autocross but only races this particular car at the regional level. They use 8" wheels in front and 9.5" wheels in the back, so you're correct regarding wheel size.

I'm using Michelin Pilot Sports on the street and the occasional HPDE. I am very pleased with them so far. They are the only real high performance tire I have used so far so I have no idea how they compare to the Kumho's mention in this post. Just another option.

No doubt, if you want the best performance out of a street ultra high performance summer tire the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 is the only way to go. Period. I know, I test tires for a living. Also, look what GM did when going for it all on the new ZR1....Pilot Sport PS2
