In my 74 vette you can insert the key and turn the ignition to the start position and it will not start the car (the owner installed a start button under the hood). With the key out you can still turn the ignition all the way to the start position. With the key in it will not turn to the acc. position. I have a tilt./tele column. What parts do I need to fix this?
This might be your problem.
Scrowel down in this general section to the thread listed as What happend, Please help, listed by coast_101.
I see you have a 74 and this might be the same problem.
Maybe your PO didnt know about this seat switch either.
Hope this helps.
looking at the pics of the reset button under the hood, that is where he put the start button. He told me he thought it was some sort of accuator rod in the ignition. I have no idea.
The PO would have either had to move the seat sensors to the new seats (??) or bypass the seat belt interlock. I'd guess he just bypassed it from your info.
A little bit of wire chasing is in order, but first, I'd look at why you can turn the lock with no key in it. When you turn the key, do the lights in the dash come on? If so, then you need to look at the ignition switch- It's on top of the column close to the brake/clutch pedal arm(s). And the neutral start switch should be high on the list too. Automatic trans, it's mounted in the console by the shifter, manual trans is at the upper end of the clutch.
Look for a 10 gauge PURPLE wire with a white stripe. Both types of neutral start switches has a 2 connector plug- Purple on one side and the purple/white stripe on the other, if memory is correct. (Memory may suck, so get the correct wiring diagram for you car and use that.)
Seems to me that you have to adjust your ignition switch under the dash and on the S/Column up or down some(adjustable) until the rod it connects from the key switch to reaches far enough to engage the starter and also travel back to activate the acc. function. .. and no the switch shouldn't turn without the key.you need that replaced too.

well i messed around with the ignition switch last night. there is something clicking under the hood. now the seat belt warning light is coming on so iguess there is a little progress, but even when i buckle the seat belt it still buzzes and the light wont go out. ??? is it possible the actuating rod isnt travelling far enough still?

The PO of my 74 told me the ignition lock was stuffed (as it wouldn't lock the steering wheel) after reading the owners manual I discovered that the shifter has
to be in REVERSE (MANUAL GEARBOX) to lock the wheel and to turn the switch to ACC.position.
Also alot of Holdens (Aussie division of GM) had the same ignition switches (as my Vette) and you can
remove the key on nearly everyone of them.

here is the latest. i cant get the car into reverse. even when the car is neutral i tried to start the car from the remote button and the car lurches backward. so evidently the car is stuck in reverse and wont come out. could this be a reason why it isnt starting at the key?
