Default Radio delete plate

My car had an old 8 track stereo when I bought it.
The slot in the middle section was partly cut open to accept the wider stereo.

My plan was to restore the stereo but once removed I found that it was in too bad condition to be worth the effort and money.

Next plan was to wait and see what stereo I could find that was suitable for the slot in the interior.

The slot was really ugly and annoying, I found an original radio delete plate on ebay, entering price was $1300 or something wich pissed me off a bit so I decided to do my own part.

This is how the slot looked without the radio:

I took a piece of sheet metal aluminum, cut it to follow the lines properly, spray can painted it satin black an put on a gas tank emblem.

I´m quite happy with the result, what do you think?

The paint may look silverish but it´s the flash light from the camera.

I think it looks good. What's holding it in place?

It looks great! The only issue with the delete plate is it will not cover the extra wide hole someone else cut. So I'm thinking that you getting pizzed over the price was a good thing since you did not buy something for a kings ransom and find it would not fit. The delete plate is available in reproduction.

Happy Holiday's

that looks good. What most of us end up doing, is removing and cutting the center gauge consol to accecpt a 1 din CD stereo and finshing it with a available plastic piece. With your sheet metal skills, you could modify or make a new panel, after removing and cutting the center consol. Then, with speakers in the kicks, you got great tunes.

Naahhh, not that many...

I have collected issues of MAD, Playboy and HotRod from 1973
just as complement at meetings.

yellow, that´s a great way to solve this, nice work, as long as you´re ready to replace all of those gauges, just to put in two new ones where the stereo sat would probably look funny.

It's rattle can truck bed coating, Dupli-color I think.
I lightly sprayed the entire bezel face so it would match...you can control the texture by the spraying distance

I just looked up the repoduction of the radio delete plate on Paragon's site, $ 160.00. Whoa!
I need one too for the gaping hole in my 69. Guess I'll try my skills at fabricating one unless I can get yellow 72 to make one for me, his turned out so perfect. : )

Mike,
Mine is of the common two piece variety and needs to be replaced. If I can swing a new one in the near future I'd gladly send you my old one for a mock up.
