I hope this is the rear end you are talking about, and not the one I am sitting on.

What are those metal pieces that are going around the ends of your half shafts, and what is their purpose?

Those are safety loops to protect the bottom of the car and everything around that area should a u-joint let go. They are available from Dragvette Products. They are highly recommended and very cheap insurance.

Half shaft loops as described above. I also have a 6 link on the rear. You can't see the upper link in this picture but it does away with using the half shaft as a stressed member of the suspension. I run no Snap rings on my stub axles. They will slide out easily when the half shaft is removed.
Here you can see it in this picture.

Thanks for posting this thread. I've been wanting to do this but nowhere close to working on the rearend yet. In fact I have most of these pics in a folder and keeping them to help me decide which way to detail when I get to that point.
Thanks again.

Is that a standard length dual mount spring or a shortened one?

That one is 1 inch shorter on both sides. I have since replaced it with a spring that is 1/2 inch shorter on both sides. The bolt angle is not so severe now. Even the upper picture is with the real narrow spring. It was the wrong spring rate and to short. I exchanged it for a stiffer one and a longer one.

Thanks.
I have a dual mount to install but that bolt angle looked strange. What size rims/tires are you running? Looks like 17' or 18" with 5 1/2 bs?

Treading carefully here... ha!

Joe: have appreciated visualizing the engineering invested under your car, too. THAT is the model in my longterm goal to match, one day when my $hip come$ in. LOL. Beautiful.

To Gordonm, Alan 71, Binnie77, Yellow, JBoweriii and others: you guys helped inspire me to do what I could with a stock frame. Thanks.

I can hardly wait to finish this unit well enough to drive the crap out of it. It's intended to get rock chips and dusty from doing just that.

I had VBP cut mine 3/4 of an inch shorter on each side, same suspension setup as Gordomn, but I wanted the spring futher away from the tires so the extra 1/4 of an inch gave me peice of mind. I'd recommend going 1/2" shorter than stock on each side unless you're running over an 11" wide tire.

Here's mine, I still have to add my half shaft loops from Toms Diff, they mount a little differently than the ones above.
I put my spring bolts upside down so if i were to run over any road debris the threaded end wouldn't catch anything as that would be very close to the ground depending on how much I had to adjust for ride height.
