Default aluminized or ss sidepipes?

The exhaust system on my 72 sb is in need of replacement and some webb sites are selling aluminized sidepipes for around $400 & ss for about $600 both ofcourse without covers, Im not sure of the difference between aluminum & aluminized , any opions?

Dave, I put a set of stainless steel ones on back in 2001 and they look as good as the day I put them on. I feel that because our cars sometimes set for very long periods of time that the stainless ones will outlast the aluminized ones.

stainless steel will never rust and a simple coat of polish will clean them up nice. Aluminized is just an aluminum coating put over regular steel to protect it from corrosion. It will not hold up as well as stainless steel. Hence the price difference.

Make sure you look into Jet Hot also. Great prices and products. I believe there is a forum deal from them. You can choose inserts depending how loud you like it.

Just so there is no misunderstanding, stainless steel CAN rust, unless you give it a surface treatment (I don’t know what the English word is, for surface treatment of stainless steel)
Stainless steel 18/10 is made of 72% steel, 18% Chrome and 10% nickel
In most cases stainless steel 18/10 will not rust, but if you live close to the sea or beside a huge industrial area stainless steel will begin to rust.

Jet Hot rusts also after a couple years of use. Have it on my truck and Vette headers and both are rusting.

There are two different types of S/S exhaust systems being sold by vendors. One is made of 409 and the other 304 Stainless. The 304 grade is more costly.

I recently bought 69 BB Aluminized Sweet Thunder,
and was very happy with the pipes and the customer support.
I don't think my Vette will see much bad weather in the future !

Very Sturdy, I highly recommend them,
great customer service and the pipes were perfect,
Their design is a little beefer than OEM,
I also ordered the larger muffler dia. for less restriction.

Aluminized is fine and will last for many, many years on our C3 that are not daily driven, and yes stainless steel will rust or they they would have called it stainnot steel
