Default Window scratches

Can anyone suggest how to keep this from happening. I took apart the door panels to my 71 and removed the outer window channel seal, the felt looks ok also checked the anti-rattle bumpers they look ok before I go spending money does anyone have any ideas or suggestions.
Also there seems to be two different types of outer window channels one is more expensive.
Thanks

Turbo,

I would recommend buying the best outer door felt you can find. I purchased the cheaper version and found it hard to fit to the door. The GM replacement part should be the way to go.

The anti-rattle bumpers are not too expensive. I replaced those too.

Good luck,
Dino

It’s pretty common to see tiny scratches in the side door glass. These are usually the result of a PO not doing basic up-keep on the car in the way of the outer window felts.

As 1stC3 said, buy the good felts and not the cheap set. The cheap set is so bad we put a note on our web site to say “Do not buy this product” The outer reproductions are available in a high quality and it is very nice. (Yes people still buy them).

Here is the note: Door Felt. Coupe Outer LH Replacement with rubber wipe (THESE ARE W0RKABLE REPLACEMENTS WE RECOMMEND YOU USE THE 283061) This part is really generic, cheap and should only be purchased with reserve. We really advise you not to purchase this item!

If your fingernail drags it, there is nothing you can do. Grinding it out will leave a prism in the glass.

I’m not sure what other vendors carry on this product, we only install the higher quality in our shop and had problems ourselves with the generic felts. This is why we put the note on this product. The way I figure it is if we can’t install it, I don’t expect you to be able to install it!

On manual window cars the generic is more user friendly and will work better, but on the power window cars the rubber it’s made of creates more tension on the glass than the motor can handle. (And they look like junk).

Aircraft Spruce has a product called "Micro-Mesh" we use it to polish out small scratches on aircraft windows. Works good, but will wear your arm off.

I have had the same trouble with window scratches.

As mentioned, the fingernail test tells all. (...if you feel it...)

'temporary' results only, with products used to date, untill I can afford to do it right with new window and seals.

Go to a good glass and mirror place, where they actually cut, polish and finish glass, not just peddle it. If they are any good they can do it for you or instruct you.
The mateials are a little pricey though.
