I`m new to this vette thing .Have 2 ,71sb coup,02 coup, going to restore the 71 myself ,not the first time restoring , just first time doing a vette.I know this car has correct engine, trans, carb, hope to find build sheet. Want to do it correct .Is it worth joining NCRS?What books should I get for reference, already have chassis manual from doing a 71 chevelle, have wiring diagram ,car won`t be judged except by me.Your advice would be appreciated.

Hi,
YES, it's worth joining the NCRS.
If you're interested in doing a restoration back to factory original or close, you should think about buying the 70-72 CORVETTE TECHNICAL INFORMATION MANUAL & JUDGING GUIDE from NCRS. Check out their Web Site and store.
As far as other books for your restoration I'd suggest the GM CHASSIS SERVICE MANUAL, and the factory ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTION MANUAL for your 71.There will be lots more suggestions.
I am the original owner of a 71, 350/270 4-speed coupe, LOVE THEM!!!
Regards,
Alan

PS: Check the large vendors and the NCRS store for many other books you may find interesting and want to have.

I just spent $336.00 on all the books I could find related to restoring my 69. Not that you have to get them all right away but there is a wealth of information in these books. This is the first Corvette Ive restored and I highly reccommend getting some of the basics before you start. Also, join the NCRS, its reasonably priced to join and the members are very helpful. I havent decided if Im going to go as far as judging yet. I have figured it would cost me about 10K extra and alot more time, but it would be interesting to try for. Good Luck with which ever way you go..

P.S. You can always sell the books on here when youre done. I understand they move pretty fast.

Also an NCRS member and I've had several cars judged. I also like to cut them up and make them very incorrect.

Being a member of the NCRS and attending Tech Sssions, Judging Meets, and getting assistance from members has been both rewarding and a big help.

So as Alan and NMT already said, for the money, it's a good experience.

I think NCRS is the biggest JOKE of the vette hobby.....

so easily fooled it's not worth even discussing origninality...not that it matters except to someone into what?? 'hero' worship?? I suppose, certainly to include all the assy line 'errors', and paint markings?? and just exactly WHAT???

some serial number that is SO easily restamped that NO judge can find it...

for that matter any vin tag on any car can be judged original....

think for a second with modern techniques that paperwork including tank stickers can't be forged???

the higher the price the more likely the car is fake...keep that in mind...

then again, to another point, is it more fun doing paperwork research to prove you are good at paperwork?? or to have fun actually getting creative and building a updated car.....

case in point, a year ago at the Kiss show down the road here in Florida, the modified modernized vettes were attracting/demanding as much or MORE than the so called 'perfect NCRS restos'.....thems the facts.....

your call....

obviously, I"m on the side of the hotrodders....

That is not what it's all about. Like this forum there are a lot of knowledgeable people sharing info and helping. People who will inspect a car for you in another area, help when there are technical issues, etc. etc. It's not all about $400 PCV valves and $2000 bias ply tires you can't drive on.

My 81 is far from original and modded and rodded from top to bottom. And believe it or not, some other NCRS folk helped with some of the technical issues.

I belong to NCRS and restored my 68 coupe to factory original but that is not the only thing NCRS is for.
Just like this forum, NCRS is a good place to get info about your car or how something should work or look. They have lots of good books at discounts for members.
It is nice to have a baseline of what the car was when it left the factory and then YOU can decide if you want to bring it back to that point or not or if you want to modify it.
My point is that at least by having a standard, YOU can make a decision of how you want YOUR Corvette to be. NCRS provides that standard and some of us follow that and others don't. There is no right or wrong, it's just what you want.

IN FACT, I agree, my point is to someone paying silly money for a 'perfect 1000 point resto' when in fact it is in fact NOT possible, and also a fake dream....

which makes me think these point cars are a rip off on resale value....

Without the NCRS their would have been no Kissimmee show, no vendors and most likely no auction there either.

If you want to do a correct restoration of your Vette join the NCRS and get the books as Alan suggested. The extent to which you follow or deviate from that is YOUR CALL. It's nice to have the info and the people that know the cars are always willing to help. I am an NCRS member but have never had a car judged. My choice. I like all Corvettes, original, restored, correct, resto-mod, hot rod. Lots of NCRS guys also like ALL Corvettes.

Enjoy the restoration however you choose to do it
