If you still have the original gas tank, what'd left of it should be glued to the top of the tank.

Sometimes the shippers copy was stashed behind the dash between the tach/speedo or behind the radio. If your car hasn't been messed with too much over the years it might still be there. Good Luck!

Try contacting the previous owner and ask where he got it from and then try to work your way back. Some states DMV offices are more lenient than others and sometimes you can get past title history from them although in this day of paranoia, it is becoming harder if not impossible. Can also go to the library and look through the newspaper classified ads on microfilm if you know about when your car changed hands, maybe an ad was posted there. There was a story somewhere about a guy who found the ad where the original owner sold his car and he still had the same phone listed in the ad from 30 years before. Good luck.
