I have a 1982 two-tone, and the power window is clicking when it is all the way up, or all the way down. When I push the power window switch either way, it will click. The window works, but it will not stop clicking when in the top or bottom position. It sounds like something is stripped. Could anyone give me a suggestion on what is happening, and how to fix it? Ecklers has replacement gears, etc. on their site, but I don't know what to get.
Also, the car runs rough (spits and sputters) from time to time. It is hard to predict. When I take it to work, it will run great, however as the day goes on, it runs poorly and I don't know if I will make it home or not. Yesterday it ran great, tomorrow may be a different story. Yes, it is a cross-fire engine so let the comments begin! The engine has 112,000 miles on it.
I appreciate any advice. I am very green at this, and need help diagnosing problems. I really want to learn! Thanks in advance for any help.
The windows really aren't that bad when it's a motor gear problem, but the larger gear can be a bear to replace. It might be best to pull the door panel off and inspect the gears to see which one might be the problem.
Yes, the crossfires can be temperamental at times but often its a problem that would choke a carburated engine as well. When is the last time you changed the fuel filter? Is the fuel pump original or have you replaced it?
I have owned the car for 3 years, and I have not changed the fuel filter or fuel pump on the car. I do not know the history of the care prior to my ownership other than it was sitting for quite some time when I bought it. I do not drive it as often as I should due to it being unpredictable. I would love to make it more reliable.
While I cant tell you exactly what the problem is as there are a number of things that may contribute to it, I would start by changing the fuel filter, its cheap and easy to do and that is one less thing you will have to consider diagnosing the problem. The fuel pump and "sock" strainer would be another area to look at if it is giving intermittent problems or the sock is clogged Once you know the fuel is getting to the injectors you will have a starting point.
Based on my experiences, I would say a gear on the window regulator. I had to replace the one on the drivers side, as well as one on my '88 Park Avenue a few years back. It is not the worst repair to do, but just like any other job, especially when you're doing it for the first time, be prepared to spend more time than you expected on it. If you do end up having to look for a regulator, I suggest checking out ebay first, I don;t recall how much they go for, but I do know I picked a brand new one up for the Corvette for less than half of the price of a new one from an actual supplier.
I tried to edit my last post but couldnt get back in to make the addition. If you havent already done so, I would also suggest changing the plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor. These items are not expensive and will eliminate other possible causes of your problem. The only difficult item on this list is the plug wires which can be a challenge to route correctly but can be done with some patience. If your plug wires arent presently routed through the heat sheilds and motor mounts they will be easy to change.
