Default Boat paint... Why not?

I have a friend who has been restoring a 1959 Corvette for 6 years. After helping him repair some glass and sanding til our arms were about to fall off a few months ago, he told me he is going to use Interlux Brightside boat paint.

http://www.yachtpaint.com/usa/

Well, after telling him he is a friggin idiot he showed me the hood, which he had already sprayed with three coats, and DAMN if it didnt look good. I still told him he is a friggin idiot, but it got me thinking about my 79, which isn't worth a 1/10 of what his is, so why shouldn't I give it a shot.

Now I don't know the difference between paints, polyurethane, one stage urethane, etc. Will it have any effect on SMC panels? Given the price to paint mine, I'm estiamting 3-5k even though I will have done most of the prep, for a car that maybe worth 9-10k after I am done with the resto, I may as well try it. He told me that it would probably costs 400-500 in materials to do mine. Supposedly this paint can be rolled on too.

Anyone have experience with this paint?

Your friend is absolutely right! That paint is fantastic, I did it on my 24ft sailboat about 4 years ago and it is still as brilliant as it was when I applied it. I did the roller and tip method which was also recommended by Interlux. So doing the spray effect would be even better! The price is about right $4-500. for the materials. Sounds ridiculous but the mairine industry swears by this product, and look at the abuse the boats take in the water! Don't understimate his efforts, I'm positive the whole car will look fantastic - show room quality.

I can see it on your car , BUT your friend would be committed in some places for spraying a 59 corvette with Boat paint Just my 2 cents

Might not be a bad idea. You would have to thin it to spray it. Boats have a coat of gelcoat to seal the fiberglass. I don't know about the Vette.

I bet if you contacted Interlux tech support or good ole Google search you would find out how to prep and paint fiberglass.

Just don't tell any of the purists that you used boat paint.

Well, I talked to my buddy with the 59 today about this. He did talk to Interlux tech and told him that he was painting a car and are there any tips or concerns he should be aware of. All they told him after each questions was "Sir, we don't reccomend this paint for vehicles." He said it was like listening to a broken record.

I have googled it, and there are a couple of websites such as "Rolled On" that have some project cars on it. Most of them are Jeeps and the like, but I did not see one single Corvette, which I think is kinda interesting.

It tells me either the people who have tried this on a Vette are too embarassed to admit it, or the paint turned out real bad.

I think I am still leaning towards trying it. Don't think it will screw up any of the fiberglass and if don't work out, I am just out a few hundred and 40-50 hours.

try it, and post pics of the process and results please. i think it should be a good paint, they are designed for fiberglass, and to protect it from everything ,constant water, UV sun 24/7, algae, sand scratching from beach, rocks, and i am guessing its one big layer so you can water sand polish if it gets dull or scratched.

i have one more question is this paint for fresh or salt water boats?

don't be fouled by the price, since its made for boats they need to buy in balk, and they are painting any were from 3-10 times the surface area of a car.
