Default 1974 PS pump question.

74 big block .... Recently I replaced my "leaking tank" power steering pump with a complete rebuilt pump from AutoZone. The replacement was more of a triangle shape tank rather than the slimmer tower, but it bolted right up. The old (now gone) pump leaked but the car drove wonderful. After the change, its as if the power assist is almost non existant. You have maybe 10% of what it was with the old pump. The leak is gone but now the steering SUX. It takes BOTH arms to turn this car.

Is there a particular Vette pump that I should look for rather than the AutoZone generic crap .... different orafice or pressure? I asked Autozone and they replied..."I can't find anything about that in the computer cause that pumps fits almost ALL Chervolets".
Thanks for any info.

Did you take the valve, spring, and plunger out of the back of your old pump to put in the new pump? The new one comes with one but it's not correct for your Vette. You always need to replace that set in any new pump that you put in.

Thanks DB.....for real?

I didn't know that - that may be the problem.

Any idea where can I get the correct valve - spring - plunger ?

I will start with Zip or Ecklers......autozone has no clue.

My old pump is long gone.

Any pump will work, but I think that setup from the back is very important to transfer. It may or may not be your problem.

I have a stock '74 pump without that valve that I will send to you if you want it, it worked great when it was removed.

I also have a source I can try for the valve on Monday but he may not have anything. Start calling used Corvette yards and while they probably won't sell just the valve they might sell you a complete pump from a C3.

DB....My pump is brand new. I gave the clowns at AutoZone my old pump as the core. It's gone of course. I didn't realize I needed to swap out the little valve thingy from the old pump. Holler if you run across one of those. The PS really is almost "not there" with the new pump. Thanks.....Fred

I wonder if a rebuilt pump from ZIP would be correct....or would it need the "old valve" too. I may call them Monday.
