So I have these gift certificates to Harbor Freight and I need a bunch of sandpaper. Is it all the same? Or is there a best brand name to get to use on fiberglass?
I've used the HF paper and it can't compare to a quality abrasive like Norton or 3M. I think sandpaper is definitely one of those things where you get what you pay for.
The better quality sand paper has a more uniform grit. A cheap sand paper may say 400 Grit but it may not be a uniform size ,so if you are preping for paint stick with 3m, if your just sanding rust use the cheap stuff.
It's the reason that you clean off your car after each sanding stage ,so you don't have a stray grit from the last sand grade.

3m is usually wet or dry, others dry only...but the back of the paper will tell you wet or dry...if you use water, the paper will cut the paint without clogging...

for finish sanding definently use good paper. Once saw a demonstration with microscopic pictures of sandpaper and the cheap stuff --say 600 grit will not have consistant size abrasives. there may be some 200 grit pieces mixed in here and there that will scratch your finished surface. But for rough sanding use the cheap cheap stuff as long as the backing paper is good enough not to fall apart.
