Xccter,
There must be a little bit of leeway on placement of speakers on the kick panels....
To Britewhite,
This will be my system for 2009. The kickpanel speakers are Polk DB651 (6-60W RMS, 180W peak, 6 1/2") as noted above. The subwoofer is Blaupunkt THb 200 A with integrated amplifier (70W RMS, 140W peak, 8"). It will be placed/screwed down on the back shelf.
This combo should be adequate for my modest needs.
Stock 4x10s and 4x6s will fit behind the kick panels without having to cut anything.
Do they sound reasonably decent? I'm no audiophile and all I want is some sound that I can hear in the front of the car. The P.O. installed one of those rear speaker bars and disconnected the kick panel speakers in my 69. His stereo guy said they would need to install an amp to drive all of them, so he picked the new ones. You can't hear anything at speed. I have small (4" x 6") 2 way door speakers in my Mustang vert and they are great. They can be heard with the top down, no problem. How bad can the stock type be?
For a template, look no further than the box the speakers came in. Normally there is a square piece of cardboard that stabalizes the speaker in the box. Just take that out and take the pieces of the speaker and mark the ring a little bigger, cut it out then use that as a pattern to marker the kick panel.
Polk Audio 6.5" is the biggest you can go unless you want to start cutting the birdcage and fabricating/modifying kick panels because of the size and displacement of the magnet.
5 1/4" speakers will fit with out having to cut on anything except the kick panel, they don't look like they are taking over the kick panel either. Picture below for those that want to compare to the larger 6 1/2".
Just do a search for kick panel speakers and you will get all sorts of results and various write ups (Lots of good detail) by the guys here.
Paul your speakers look sharp, did you paint the rings or dye them?
I get custom vinyl dye (oxblood) from my local AC Delco paint place. They do it up in a paint can for about $20.00.
They also provide me with exterior paint (Medium Red Metallic). The gas door on a 1974 does not have an emblem so I will be using this 1975 version with sunburst next summer.

I just ordered the Blaupunkt THB200A ($149.00 also and some dynamat extreme ($129.) . They have a special on both, free shipping and an additional Valentines day $15.00 discount on orders over $200.
Let me just comment,, after playing around with several combos, I arrived at a 'What's his name' type system. That is, 2 excellent quality door speakers, a 4 ch amp , and a 10" sub behind the drive (pointed AWAY from the driver). Can't go wrong with this system. I chose the Infinity Kappa 62.9s for the doors (a 2 Ohm speaker, so must be driven by an Amp) and they need a 1/2" spacer, 'cause the magnets ain't play'in ,, With a 4 Channel amp, ch's 1 & 2 drive the kick panel speakers,, bridged ch's 3 & 4 to drive the sub, done.
Thanks Paul. After seeing pictures of the rings dyed it makes the speakers look like they are stock, if you never knew they weren't. This will probably be the next thing I do. Anything to keep from starting the body-off.
