Default Help with tracking down a previous owner?

My 1973 Stingray Convertible can be see here: www.coolvette.nu
The known history of my car is as follows:

It was shipped from the US in the end of 2005 with destination Denmark. Two buddies had a small business importing american cars for fun.
In the beginning of 2006 they couldn´t agree on how to develop their small company, one of them wanted to go on with his ordinary daytime job and sell cars at his spare time while the other guy wanted to go all the way and become a full time car dealer.

They spent the year of 2006 with argueing about witch way to go.

They finally agreed to split the business and they took half of the inventories including the cars.
In the beginning of the summer of 2007 I saw the car ad and found it to be a good deal so I bought it.

The car runs great even if I could use some more ponies as many of us thinks, don´t we?

The condition are great overall, I believe it was painted just before the shipping to Denmark and the interior are great too.

I got the title with the car and would like to ask for some assistance
in tracking the previous owner down.
As I read the title the last owner in US owned it for about 3 years wich makes him unlikely to be a car dealer and I think this guy knows some interesting facts about the car that I own.

Can anyone please do a search for the owner on the title?

A larger copy of the title is available if needed.

As you can see it left the customs in Newark on October 12´th 2005.

I found the site www.intelius.com where I think I got a hit on the guy but to get more information, phone number and som other useful stuff I needed to pay with my credit card over a crappy phone line overseas wich didn´t attract me at all.
Note that I don´t mind his criminal record or anything like that, I just want to know if he can remember any history about the car, what was done to the engine and transmission and so on.

I will of course pay any helper to cover all expenses, I have a valid PayPal account, to transfer money won´t be an issue.
I just want to have a local guy who can do the search for this guy from inside the US.

I think you can track this guy down, if he´s still alive of course.
Anyone who can give me an helping hand here?

you are lucky, my last 1970 that I sold, I was able to get a dmv report of previous owners, before the privacy laws took hold... they found 7 previous owners back to 1980, then it was in another state...

so it had at minimum 8 owners, 9 counting me and now 10 counting the guy I sold it to.. I owned it for 13 years, which was by far a record for the poor car...

gee, which one of them would know when the engine might have been rebuilt??

anyway, you are up to a tough task, good luck...

remember, the more you find out, the more you may find out what you don't want to know and will be obligated to disclose when you sell...

I'm also very interested in tracking down some history behind my 79 that came from USA two years ago. Is there any chance to get a report of previous owners or not anymore? Or just perhaps SOME kind of information about the history of this car from DMV?

Sorry for jumping into this topic with my issue but hope you don't mind since it's the same basic question.

Joewill,
my title search was very similar to yours, many previous owners. And I, by far have been the record.

Like Joewill mentioned you can do a title search through New York and see what that provides. My experiences is that the States to not talk. Meaning my title search for my 68 through Florida DMV Went back to 1970 where it went to Georiga. I have yet to continue the search in the State of Georgia.
I did get a lot of titles and other paperwork though.

Good luck.

With the internet and a phone you should be able to do just about anything that anybody else can do no matter where in the world you are. I think it would be interesting to find out history about a car. Maybe when I have mine on the road I may dive into that and see what can be found. I just found in a box of stuff a catalog from Mershons that had a ad and pic of my car for sale 15 years ago when the guy I got it from bought it. I wonder if they have or will give me any info from something that long ago? Good luck

CoolvetteC3, contact the state of New York via the internet and see if they can supply a title history for your car. You will have to provide the VIN and may need to pay a nominal fee. They may not provide contact information but if you have the names and you know they are in New York that's a good part of the battle. Internet search of the names and locations can fill in more information.

My 72 was last titled in Kentucky so I wrote to them and for $2.00 US I received the car's registered owners back to 1982 which was as far as their microfiche went back.

I knew the original selling dealer was also in Kentucky so I'm fairly sure the car never left the state until I purchased it.

By the way, based on my experience, Bubba lives in Kentucky.

Good luck.

cc

PS, if you have any friends in law enforcement, they have great contacts for this sort of thing.

The quick search that I did on him shows his current address as the one on the title.
The Social Security Index does not show him as deceased.
I also have a phone number that came up in the search, PM me if you want it.

babylonvette´s kind offer to visit the previous owners adress on the title turned out to be a dead end, unfortunately.
The man didn´t live there anymore and the neighbors said that he moved some years ago. I will try and dig some more and if I can find him elsewhere.

I would like to search for previous owners so I need help with finding somewhere in the state of New York to send my request for history as CCrane suggests above.

Anyone who can help me find the authority to send my request to?

I found another address,

111 Oak Street
Deer Park 11729

I would start with him, don't think you will get far with the State of NY.
