Default Update photos on winter project

I finished up installing my new cam in my motor. I took today off and degreed the cam 1 last time for confrimation of the numbers.

I was pleased that the opening numbers were both off by only 1/2 degree

The closings numbers were dead on.

I had called Crane to ask a question and a man in their tech department alarmed me by saying that the cam I had installed was way to radical for my motor.

I explained that is was the original replacement for the 71 LT-1 and he still said , to hold on tight when this thing reaches 3000 RPM

He stated the duration numbers were the main thing

The cam has 459 lift and 242 duration on intake

and 485 lift and 254 duration on exhaust.

Do these numbers realy sound so extrem?

I installed brass freeze plugs , I think the contrast in colors stand out nicely.

Will post more updates as they occur.

I now nned to get it into the car so I can start putting A Arms ans steering back on.

Thanks
David

I do not know if your cam is comparable to stock LT-1 but when I first got my stock 71 LT-1 it would really come on the cam at 3000rpm but after I had the carburator rebuilt and played with different springs in the secondary vacuum opener it had great power without the surge at 3000rpm. I think the secondary opening spring was too weak and allowed the secondaries to open too soon and make the engine run too rich until 3000rpm. I know that high performance twe stroke engines come on the cam due to exhaust scavaging but I don't think four strokes do unless it was an all out racing engine with tuned exhaust and everything. Could be wrong.Ed

Hi David,
I thought you were making progress because I hadn't seen you on the Forum this week.
As usual your work looks TERRIFIC.
What did you decide to use on the exhaust manifolds?
Regards,
Alan

Hey Alan , good to hear from you friend.

Yes , I have made some good progress lately. My new role at work has me traveling so much that I am getting concerned that I may not make my new mid April target date now.

As for the manifolds. After getting a 300.00 estimate to coat them, I decided I was jut not going to spend that money.

I had them sandblasted , and I used a material called HOT STUFF

It is about 10.00 or 12.00 for a small container.

It is a mix of stainless steel / ceramic and you brush it on in a thin layer

Let dry for 2 hours and if you can not start the motor to cure , you then place in a over for 1 hour.

I had used it last year and it holds up quite well for the expense.

I am out of town the next 2 week ends.

three weeks out my local buddy will help me get the motor back in the car so I can start putting the suspension back on.

I need to get the car rolled outside so I can break in the cam.

Will send more updates when they occur.

Thanks

David
