Default Question on removing A.I.R.

I'm going to be removing the A.I.R (OK you NCRS and correct people, move along, nothing to see here...).When I disconnect from the exhaust manifold do I put bolts where the tubes were? If so how long?

Thanks!

You can either tap the holes and install some Allen-head set screws (no heads on them) or plug them with pieces of steel rod and weld them in.

I just removed the A.I.R. from my 73 350. I used 1/4-18 MPT socket plugs. The taper on these plugs do a good job of sealing and the plugs do not stick out far at all.

If you could find some 1/4-18 NPT recessed allen head pipe plugs, that would work fine and look the most correct.

Be sure to pull the small tubes out of the exhaust manifold after you unbolt A.I.R. tubes. The plugs just screw right in.

Be sure to keep everything and find out what that stuff is worth before selling it too.

Thanks for the offer, nothing like free stuff! I'm not removing right away but I'll let you know if I need them.

Thanks everyone for answering my question!

The threads in the manifold are straight threads 18 tpi. I did not re-tap, the NPT "face-plugs" will screw right in and seal real well. Face-plug is a common name for a plug that has a hex socket as opposed to a plug that has a square drive head on it. I actually bought a set of plugs from cc and all they were, were 1/4-18 Npt square drive plugs. But they stuck out too far and looked terrible. live and learn.............. steve
