Where do you live? (Fill out your profile) If you're in Cali, you can throw that idea right out thw window.
Just curious, are there any other modifications to the car? Its always nice to know everything about the car before you start making any changes.
the loudness depends on the insert you put in them, I have sweet thunder in my side pipes, and couldn't be happier, its LOUD but I can still have a conversation with out yelling too much
JetHot sells the Hooker Super Competiton Pipes - $1100-1200 (I think). There are a couple different inserts to choose from too and tell them you're a forumn member and it'll get you a discount!
Love those heat shields....Where did you get them?
*edited*
Also, how do you attach them to your hookers?
I am almost done with my hooker sidepipe install and have been looking for covers. I found the ones on MidAmerica but they are way overpriced

I bought mine from Summit and put Hooker MaxFlo Muffler inserts in them. They have a nice deep old school rumble to them and are not too obnoxiuos when you put your foot into it. I am very happy with the way they look and sound.

The heat shields are from Cobrastuff. They attach with 2 stainless straps. They work very well. http://www.cobrastuff.com/

except i didn't get them from summit. just put em on 2 weeks age and they sound sweet.
I got my set up from Jet Hot Sterling silver finish.I purchased the Spiral Baffles from STS. The hookers and pipes ran about 1100.00 and the baffles were 225.00.
I also have a 78 and have been wondering if side pipes were available. Those pipes look awesome on your car. I'm gonna have to check out that link to get some for my car now! How do they sound?

They sound great! There are a number of different mufflers you can get for them depending on how much noise you want to make. I have Spiral Turbo Baffles and they will not hurt your ear drums.
You'll also have to decide what type of finish you want. You can get them painted, ceramic coated, chrome, or stainless steel. They all have their advantages/disadvantages. I went with stainless -- only cost a little more than chrome and rust should not be an issue. I wanted durable AND shiney. Got them from Summit . . . very fast delivery -- like next day. Also went with the STS baffles -- They have a center cap that can be drilled out if you want more noise or if you need more airflow for higher HP applications. If you get them too loud, you can weld a new cap back on. They get very hot, so shields would be recommended. I got the steelshield.com "plain & simple".
This was definitely the best upgrade I've made on the car . . . it was not cheap, but well worth it!!!
Here is a video I did to give you an idea of the sound. There are others out there too that make good comparisons betweed different types of baffles . . . you just have to look for them.

Thanks for the info. I was also considering those electric bypass doors that allow you to totally bypass your mufflers when you want a lot of noise and then hit a switch when you want your mufflers to tone down the sound. Have you or anyone here had any experience with these? Thanks.
