The 74 will run for about 2 mins until it hits over 200. I took out the thermostat and replaced water pump, still nothing. What else can be done? Flush radiator and ____? Thanks guys.

The temperature gauge sending unit vs. the dash unit is a constant problem these days. This problem is so prevalent that I have been testing dash units and over the counter sending unit for the past two months.

Have you tested the car with a manual gauge or a IR gun to see what the actual temperature of the car is?

Also, is the car boiling over?

So there's a possibility of gauge malfunction that isn't out of the range of possibility, but I have saw that the reserve tank is used after its been ran hot. And then there's the issue of checking wires/crap? Anybody feel like elaborating further on that?

some hoses have an inner spring like wire that helps to keep the hoses from collapsing on themselves...

my gauge was running very hot as well.
i found some temp vs ohm specs on this site.
when i measured it the ohm reading for the temp was way off.

i bought a sending unit from lectic unlimited that put out the amount of ohms that were specified and turned out i wasnt overheating afterall.

There is a spring inside the lower hose to keep it from collapsing and restricting water flow..

Check gauge for accuracy.

Radiator could be plugged, is it original?

Timing could be retarded.

Fan clutch shot.

Block could be plugged, remove drain plugs and see if any crud comes out.

The lower radiator hose is the "suction" hose. It has an internal wire, coiled like a big spring, which prevents the hose from collapsing under the suction of the water pump. If the hose is old, the 'spring' could be rusted to pieces or damaged allowing the hose to close off during operation. No water flow = no cooling. Your problem could also be a crudded-up radiator which no longer cools properly; but those are the most likely problems since you have already removed the thermostat. If the hose is good, you need to use radiator cleaner to get the 'gunk' out [flushing a corroded radiator will not clear it of lime deposits].

The radiator does have crud in it.. And I'm pretty sure that spring doesn't collapse yet, when I squeeze it it doesn't suck in. Still might be the gauge malfunction but my money is in cleaning the rad. Thanks everybody that really helps!

Ha spelled crud wrong!
