I have a 71 matching numbers car. When pulling in and out of parking spaces, the power steering pump is howling. When the car is stopped and I try turning the wheels, the pump moans and groans. The Autozone, Advanced Auto, and NAPA pumps all meet OEM specs but I'm concerned about non-matching number parts. Are the pumps date coded? Who sells a quuality replacement pump? Can pumps be rebuilt?
The date code is stamped on the side of the reservoir as shown.
Most automotive stores sell a pump housing. You swap your reservoir onto the housing. So any date coding transfers to your new pump.
You also swap your spring, flow control valve, and discharge fitting. This insures that flow and pressure relief will be the same as your original.
