I have a 68 convertible with an orig. M22 transmission. Problem I have is the engine has been changed to a 350 engine. I read that there were only 80 M-22 transmissions made that year. Short of dropping the gas tank is there a way to find out what engine came in it? I also read that there were 80 L88's made. Did they all have M-22 transmissions? Would it be worth while to me to drop the gas tank to try and see if the build sheet is there and if so how hard is it to do?
appreciate the help. I'm still new to this and don't know. Guy I bought the car from told me it had an orig. big block 427 motor in it.
Is the VIN # on the transmission? Post the numbers on the transmission and someone will surely decode it for you. As far as I know only the L88 had an M22. Have you pulled off the sidecover to look at the helix angle, and I assume it has a fill and a drain plug. I would definitely drop the tank. You actually can usually reach up there to feel for the sticker and if it is there, by all means drop the tank.
numbers are stamped by side cover where shifter arms mount. Only L-88 cars ahd M-22 Muncies, if your car was original L-88 it would have J-56 brakes too, and big aluminum radiator. Take some photos of front brakes from Engine side and radiator area.

I'll get some pictures of that, don't think the radiator would still be the same b/c the front clip has been replaced. I was told that the shockes on the front were for a big block engine and thats why the front end sets up so much higher.
best picture I have of the radiator while at work.
thats the picture of interior ( for radio) like I said though don't beleive it to be orig. b/c it has digital clock and pretty sure they didn't have that in 68
I thought all 68 Muncie cases were stamped the same. The only difference is the 22 degree cuts in the gears. VIN # doesn't help only build sheet or you being the original owner with all the paperwork.
Also does it have a rear sway bar and what is the redline on the tach?
well since it has a heater I almost 99% sure it was never a L88 from the factory. you most likly only have a M21 or M20. everyone who knows nothing about a covettes will tell you it was BB and has a M22 not knowing. the shocks were the same for BB and SB only the springs were diffreant. does the car have any ground straps anywhere thorgh out the car?

where would I look for the ground straps? and How would I 100% sure find out if its a M22 transmission then?

I guess this is what you're talking about as far as rear sway bar?

Nope, sway bar mounts to the underside of the frame between the rear bulkhead and the spare carrier and has end links that mount to the top of the trailing arms above the spring bolts.
