The other day I went for a ride with my kid... I hitted the highway and heard some metal noise like if you run over a metal piece in the road thats lifts and hit the under of the car...
I checked the mirrows and saw nothing so I continued the ride....
but my head kept wonderig about that... after getting out of the HW and going back home i was stop by a traffic ligth so i got of the car and checked if something was wrong.. and yes i found out that the center of the hubcup was gone!!!! At least I knew where it fall so I went back home.. leved the kid and went to the place i supposed it fell... the highway is more a 2 lane road in each direction with a 4 meter separation in the middle and its grass . As The hub was driver side i was more than sure it went rolling to the middle... so heres the crazy part I cressed there and after walking about 100 ft I foung the damn thing.... then I had to wait almost 10 minutes to find a gap in the traffic to safely cross the road back to where the car was parked....
Then I thought about it again in i think i was stupid.. i could have caused mayor accident there...
should have called the hw sos.....
but at least I got my hub back... and those are impossible to get here.....
anyone went through similar situations?....
Hi K74,
If your talking about the center cap of a rally wheel I can understand 1 flying off. They have an odd way of clipping on to the wheel. Glad you found it!!!!
Regards,
Alan
Given the price of those center caps on the rallye wheels, even here where they are available, I'd have gone back looking for mine too. Crazy to risk your life, but I think I know where you're coming from. If I knew where it came off the car, it would eat at me until I went back to look for it.
Similar story was that I had a loose mirror head on the right side racing mirror on my 69 Mustang. I was making a left turn through a very busy intersection and the stupid head popped out of the mirror body and then got run over by a couple of other cars. I actually made a U-turn, got into a left turn lane adjacent to the spot where my mirror popped out, and then dodged between cars to get the metal mirror base back so I could have a new mirror made and repair the racing unit. The racing mirrors cost over $125 each and would have to be painted body color, so I didn't want to replace the whole thing. I got the mirror base, had a new piece made and re-installed it in the racing mirror body while tightening up it's operation. Still, I was pretty scared standing out on a six lane boulevard with my car sitting empty in the left turn lane. I was wondering which of us was going to get hit first.
You're really lucky you found the cap. I lost my right-front over an embankment last summer and have been running an unbranded repo from my buddy's '68 camaro since then.
about flying objects i just remember the worst it happened to me... like 8 years ago I was on the car and fotget to tighten the top latches as I used to use them unhooked becuase they did a anoying sound... the thing is that when i got to the hiway i forgot about them and i was going about 60 mkiles and suddenly it flew away!!!! luckily it didn't hit anyone...but it was runover by many cars though... so i managed to rescue the hole thing... and had it fix in the time.... but it lost it original curve....
Alan yes i meant the rally center.. they are two pieces the dish that covers the wheel center and the cup with the emblem that is screw to the dish.. that last pices is the one that got loose....
Ecklers sells some sort of a cable that will hook the hub caps with the rim. I have been thinking of getting those in the fear of losing my original shiny center caps.
