Default A few more stereo Qs......

Q#1 Does anyone know....can I mount my Polk db 651 spks in the kick panel w/o cutting the cage behind....will they fit??

Q#2 My 75 has a thick wire harness and the antenna cable coming down through the opening behind my left side kick panel.....anyone else run into this? Did you cut the metal in order to move it out of the way so the spk fits better?

Q#3 I will be using a JL 75x4 amp....will my stock alt. be able to handle it until I can get a better alt?

Q#4 Did I see on some thread that using those foam baffle cups for spks that you get from Crutchfield may actually hinder the speaker's performance, thus not such a good idea to use?

Thanks for all the great help guys.....I'll try to post some pics when I'm all done!!

Tom

Yes, but you better make sure you measure twice and cut once because the magnets just barely fit.

Also, make sure you position the speakers so the wire connectors face towards the top of the car so the wires won't get pinched.

Well, that's not going to happen.

He did walk me through my install though.

Sure,, any stereo install shop will have 1/2" spacers you pick up for cheap and use. I needed them for the infinity 62.9's i installed, they cause no interference even in a manual.

i tried the 6.5s in the kicks for my car and ran into an issue. if your cars a manual and youve got big feet, youll probably put your foot through the speaker, or rip it off in about 10 seconds. i could never get the clutch with out hitting the speaker.

Default Speakers In Kicks

I bought speakers & an amp last winter then stopped because I figured I "Have" to cut the cage in my 82.

Since then I've been thinking (a dangerous habit I know) but.. .

I wouldn't mind cutting the cage, and mounting the speakers directly to the remaining metal. Then I could use the kick as the "speaker cover", it already has some Pre-existing "Speaker Holes" why couldn't I custom drill additional ones.

This would "Muffle" the sound I know, but perhaps not "too" and it would really keep the "stock" appearance I desire.

Thoughts?

PS: Also I bought a "Concourse" radio Cassette from Ecklers and even with good 4x6s and 6x9's it still sounds Like a piece of Cra --.

I plan know to put the stock radio back in for looks and place a remote operated unit in the storage bin. The smaller the better. I'm even thinkng (although I don't have one yet) that an MP3 jack, for in I-pod or whatever would take up far less space than cd players of anykind. Right?

tsm75 -

If you put the speakers on top of the plastic mounting rings you will have plenty of room for the magnet. Even on the driver's side you will clear the hood release handle just barely.

I just installed Polk db651's in my car and yes, I've had to retrain my clutch foot to avoid the speaker on the drivers side...

I havent ripped it off and dont think I will but it does limit my ability to get my "bozo-the-clown" sized feet past the clutch pedal to the floor beyond while driving.

The floor pan must be different in later C3's. On my 72 there is a hump under the left side of the clutch pedal and if I don't get my foot over to the right far enough I can't even disengage the clutch safety switch.

Because of that I don't come anywhere close to the speaker.

Tom,

Let us know how you make out. I will be attempting that installation in about three weeks when my 1974 is out of winter storage. Mine is an automatic so clutch clearance is not a problem. The hood release handle might be.

I made a mistake on my earlier configuration of the speakers and my posts on this subject. The wire terminals were on the bottom should be on top. They now are. Seems counter-intuitive as it leaves the Polk logos upside down but what the heck. Who will notice?

Part, if not all, of the reason some install 6.5 is for more bass. A conventional speaker needs to have the back waves separated from the front to prevent cancellation of the bass i.e. be in a "box".
Typically MDF or some board is used.

A speaker should be solidly mounted so that the power is translated to the speaker cone not moving the flexibile kick panel. With 3 of 4 screws tight into the frame w/ a plate to separate the front waves from back, tightening the 4th screw improved the sound.

There are several stereo experts in C3. Most have 5 1/4 in front though some would have preferred 6.5.

The case for 5.25.
Can be solidly mounted to the frame in a box.
Ideal for natural sound.
Better off axis response.
Can be angled.
Out of the way!

Kenwood eXcelon lightweight 5.25 in front.

This picture was posted by Stevekk on January 21 during an earlier discussion on kick panel speakers. It shows two adapter rings that came with his Polk 6 1/2" speakers. My Polks did not come with those rings and they seem useful in reinforcing the panel plastic. If anyone has a pair that they wish to part with for a reasonable price shoot me a PM or e-mail. Thanks!
