i have an 81 with the 350 auto in it and want to have it pulled this summer and rebuilt into something better anyone have any opinions on the best motor to make it into or options without too much modification or expense, im really fascinated with the 383 stroker kits and it would push about 450 hp

A 450 hp 383 is going to involve significant modifications and expense.

you also have a 2 bolt main, 450 probably wont be a problem, but something to consider

you would be better off getting some brodix heads, a good cam, intake, and going from there

I agree the stroker would be fun, but to really do it right you are talking quite a bit of money( to me anyway), so I guess it depends on what you define as too much expense. Keep in mind you may need to have your transmission beefed up as well.

i would like to stay around 5k, had a shop quote 1800 to pull and rebuild with no mods, also heard to just use the original 350 and add performance parts to it and could also hit 450-500 horse

5000 is a good target. Don't get top carried away as You can easily drop 5000 into a stroker, just in parts. And yeah you can use the turbo 350 trans ( I have one behind my 406), but again it'll cost money to build it up. Sounds like a fun project, good luck
