Default Cleaning the engine bay suxs......

Man I hate doing this. I cleaned the upper section today. Tomorrow the underneath. What a mess and It's not even that dirty.

I did realize a good trick, hooking the garden hose up to the shop sink and let the hot water blast. Just like steam cleaning.

Give me a couple of day and I have it hopefully clean enough to eat off of. 40 years of crude is not pretty.

I hear ya Budman.. I cleaned my 68 earlier this winter. Took some effort but it was WELL worth it. Just keep at it and you will be very pleased with the results. Yours is coming along nicely. Living in the US you might find some of that CDC cleaner that is always mentioned. I can't get it up here in Canada so had to use elbow grease.

Good luck and show us pictures when you are finished.

shmoky

PS here is mine when it was all done.

BudMan I am going to feel your pain lol. Plus some I think as yours looks clean lol. I just removed the SB and auto from my 73 a couple of days ago and just waiting for the time to do it. I can see a great deal of Castroil Super Clean or Purple Power in the near future lol. The worst part is this is just one small step lol. To make room for the Big Block going back in.

spray super cleaner/purple power on everything, wait 30 mins, wash off, do it a couple times and see what a difference it makes, thats the best thing you can do without actually scrubbing or pressure washing

I'm in the middle of the same job, engine out to be rebuilt and upgrade and cleaning the engine bay. Once it's clean it is proper to wipe with laquer thinner and paint or should I be priming over the current black finish before repainting. I'm scrubbing off all the paint drips in the bay from the bubba paintjob to smooth things out and cleaning well. I want to do it right so the job lasts, can I just shoot it then?

Hi V69,
I did as you mentioned... cleaned, wiped with lacquer thinner and painted with Krylon #1613.
I think how much priming and sanding you do depends on what finish you're looking for. I was interested in a factory+ look.
Regards,
Alan

Thanks Alan. I'm not going for the glossy show car look, Factory finish would be just fine. I bought the Eastwood Chassis Semi Gloss for the frame and Under hood black for the rest of it. Got to have a nice clean place to drop the 383 in when it's done.

I'm getting close to having my 71 back together and ready for its first drive since I have owned it. Engine/trans are detailed and ready to drop in, trying to get the engine compartment all slicked out so I can do the drop. I hope to have this car drivable soon and I cant wait, I have got a lot of help from some great guys in here to get me this far. The People are great and the Vendors in here have been great.. Heres a couple pics of where my basket case trailer full of pieces project is at now. Thanks again to all who have helped me here!

I've got a power washer at work, but reluctant to use it on the vette.

I didn't hesitate. Used the power washer and purple stuff while the engine was out. Worked wonders.
