I’ve got a 71 coupe that I am nearly done restoring and have run into a small problem. I removed the steering wheel and the external parts of the steering column so I could paint them. This is a standard steering column, not TT. Removing the ignition and turn signal housing requires removal of the shaft lock that is held in place by a wire retaining ring. As you can probably guess, while removing the retaining ring it went “boing” and took a trip to nevernever land. This retaining ring is essentially a wire “C” clip, sometime referred to as a “circlip”. I have visited several local Chevy dealers and none can find a part number or generally available replacement part. My local Auto Parts stores have retaining rings but none are wire “C” clips.
You can give these guys a call http://columnsgalore.com/index.htm and see if they will sell you one.
Also, Dr Rebuild lists it in his catalog Part # 6521122 $9.75
I looked in an old GM parts book I have but I am not sure which clip you need. Here is what I have and the GM part #
ignition key warning buzzer clip #7804419
steering shaft stop ring clip #7804439
steer column lower brg adapter clip #7804439
These were GM part numbers in Dec 1983 when this book was published. All the clips were under a buck.
