Default are Corvette engines....

different from other GM engines (original that is)?

Is the base 350 a different performance level then the passenger car engine from the same era? Or is it the same basic 4 barrel 350 that would have been found in trucks, wagons, etc.

The L 48 motor was used in a lot of different cars. No difference in the engine.

Corvette engines have unique markings that are not on other GM cars of the same era. I don't know if they are built any differenly though.

All engines for all GM cars were built to a defined specification to accommodate large and small variations from one car type to the next. These difference are recorded in the last two or three letters on the engine stamp pad.

Are Corvette engines 'special' and 'unique'? No more or less than any other car line.

Yes they are different just try mounting a chevy 350's after market alum. water pump and when the passenger side's gasket blow's twice you'll know it as well as I do, In addition I believe the L82 has some upgrades. But I'm no scholar on this.

That happened to me! Went to purchase a water pump @ O'Reily's and they sold me a water pump for a regular 350 Chevy...it just didn't fit "like it'supposed to" Started it up and she started leaking.....returned for a swap and the same thing happened. Returned it for a refund.....went to Autozone and the exact same thing happened!! Ordered a "Corvette" water pump from Eckler's and NO PROBLEMS!! (that was 2 years ago). ALSO, found out that the regular 350 water pump was about 1/8 inch longer than a "Corvette" waterpump....thus throwing out your belt alignment by that much (having the belts come off at high RPMs would be common) if you use the regular pump.

That's been my personal experience...

None of the basic components of the engine are "unique" to the Corvette. However, the specific combination of block, heads, cam, intake, carb, lifters, and external 'dress' details might only be used for a specific Corvette application. But that is no different than a specific engine build only being used in a 6-cyl. Chevy Nova.
