2,722 L-71's with 8,161 automatics and 30,349 with 4 speeds. Total production in 69 was 38,762. That's info from another Vette site. AFAIK, no way to tell how many of the L-71's were autos or manuals.

2,722 is a relatively low number of the total 38,762 that were built. The M40 option you're inquiring about was a $290.40 add on. I'd guess most people that wanted the L-71 HP option wanted a 4 speed, but there's no way of knowing for sure. It's probably a low percentage of that 2,722 number, perhaps 10% or less, but again, nobody knows.

255 were built and this includes L71 and L89.
The source for this info was a 1981 letter from GM to an owner who wrote GM and asked.
I say it includes L89 as well because the reply stated "255 built with 435hp and THM".
Don't have a copy of the letter, but here is a GM release on the new trans.

Thanks everyone for your response the 255 number sounds logical because back in 69' 4-speeds were the thing, especially in a solid lifter
car.

A THM 400 built to take that kind of torque and RPM is very unique. Interesting article....

Any body know how to attach a .pdf? I have a copy of the Chevrolet letter, and it is unreadable in .jpeg format.
