Been under the vette all winter scrapping grease, rust, dirt ,and old paint off the frame and under body getting ready to apply rust bullet to the frame and paint to the rest. Every thing should look good when done but the pipes from the headers to the mufflers look old and rusty they are still solid and don't leak don"t want to buy new ones can I paint them with rust bullet or will it burn off or just really stink or maybe something else.
If the pipes have a light coating of surface rust, you can try using steel wool and an aluminum brightener. You might also want to hit them with a high temp clear to keep the rust from coming back. If they are heavily rusted and pitted, I'm not sure what you can do. Its tough to get any kind paint to adhere to a heavily rusted piece for very long.

Rust bullet will work as it can handle high temperature.
Make sure that the pipes have rust flakes. RB bonds well with surface rust.
I am thinking of using the silver RB on the exhaust pipes on my car at some point.
I used high temperature header paint from VHT I believe. It was alluminum colour and my goal was to make the pipes look new. I spent many hours with a wire brush cleaning off the rust, then some emery cloth and finally wiping it down with mineral spirits. The end result was I couldn't see the small amounts of pitting when I was sanding but they were all visible with the alluminum paint. The paint is still on there and has not come off. Maybe I will try the steel wool method mentioned above. If you are going to paint them I suggest the black paint instead because it won't show the pitting.
On my 66 Nova I hit the rust with a wire brush and then sprayed rust converter on it and then silver engine paint.. its lasted pretty good for a couple years so far. When I replace the exhaust I will put something good on it right away before it rust..
