th reason for the squat is the independent suspension. all vettes to this to some extreme. the subber cushion is an easy fix and can do it with a prybar and about a half hour. you will notice a big improvement in the feel of the "squat" but wont ever get rid of it. to make it easier next time replace the bolt upside down as removing it the first time through the top can be tricky and time consuming.
hello everybody!! well my father owns a 1982 and every time he puts it into gear(automatic) it squats down (sometimes violently) is this normal?? thank you to everybody in advanced.
Is this his frist corvette ? He might not be warming it up correctly,What I do is start the car (idles up to 750ish) let it do that while hitting the gas pedal real hard and quick but not to many rpms hit the throttle till it idles down to 550 put her in drive or reverse and go the idle real high will make the car squatt real bad,ask him if it does it after its warmed up.

its funny that you brought this up because i just got back from the tire shop and i let my dad test the tires he put it into gear and it didnt hit as hard.... i think your right about the idle. thanks alot brotha!!!!!!
This is normal to a point with a rear wheel drive car, caused by torque and in some cases traction bars are needed to limit this action during acceleration. In your case check the idle and mechanicals as mentioned. Also check the driveline to make sure there is not a lot of play "this could increase the jerk feeling when you drop it in gear.
Preliminary check is to rock between Rev and Drive a few times with your foot on the brake and see if there is a jerk in each direction. If so check the U joints on the main drive shaft or half shafts and also for excessive play in the transmission or differential. You will have to have the rear wheels off the ground and have someone turn one of the wheels back and forth to locate the play. Be sure the car is secure on stands before getting under.
Just locate the problem before you start throwing money at a problem, "if there is a problem". Good Luck !

its not my money so im cool with it hahaha.. but on a serious note thanks for the detailed explanation weekends almost here so im gonna do the snubber bushing (its in bad shape) but im also gonna do this while its off the ground... +1
would anybody know how to set the idle.. my fathers 82 will bounce from 1100- 650ish but it never drops down to idle... this is when it is in park. when its in drive it jolts slightly when im stopped.. any help guys????
right on now is this something i can pick up at the dealership or would i have to go to the local tuner shop???
Top right corner of the bag say "Corvette America". You can get it there or just about any of the Vette catalog houses. While your at it make sure to inspect the bracket that this fits into. Mine was cracked and the hole was elongated.

Does it start at 1100 when cold and drop to 650 when warmed up, or does the idle bounce around once its warmed up? If it does that once its warmed up, or surges when you're driving, you may need to have the TBI's bushed. Lots of posts on the Crossfire forum about that.

yea it bounces like crazy thanks for the heads up++
This is my 2nd "82" and they both squat when putting it into drive. I've replaced all the suspension bushings, tranny & engine mounts in this car, it still does it....
My '82' does this also, it not only "squats", but really jerks-hard engage-even when it is idling at 600. Reverse you don't notice it as much and the back end raises with the torq. If I could get rid of the 'jerk', my wife would probably ride with me more! I was told that there may be a spring pressure adjustment in the trans. that is set to high. I think it is more than the snubber bushing that you are talking about. I wish it would engage as smooth as my Cad.
