Default Please help a new guy!!

I'd like to start off with please excuse my novice questions. This is my first car, I am VERY proud of it, I'm doing it all by myself and I want to get it right....which leads me to ask questions that may make some of you roll your eyes. Either way, I am very gracious for anyones help. Anyway, here are my questions....

Can anyone help me name these parts....The guy I bought the car from was very very nice and gave me all his spare parts free of charge. Only problem is, since Im new, I can quite figure some of these out....

Next....

This arm attached to the carb with the hook on the other end, what is suppose to be attached to the hook side??

Next....

This is a picture of the fuel pump (sorry its upside down) and is that little nozzle without anything on it where the fuel line is suppose to be?

Lastly, as I was working today, I found that I did not have a mount or retainer for the shift linkage under the car to the tranny. So everytime I shift, the trans wont go into great because the line isnt secured. Does anyone know where I could get one of these?

Thanks so much for reading, all your help means alot.

Jordan

And heres the destruction I did today ;-)

Welcome Jordan. First thing I will tell you is to go easy. Don't tear the whole car apart in the first day. Take some time to get to know her. Read the forum and pick up a chassis assembly manual. Start small. Get it running, fix that transmission cable and fuel line. Fix the things that you know are wrong, then move on to other larger jobs. And before all that, you need to post some good pictures of the whole car. We love pics here.
What year is the car? Must be a late C3 if it's got a glove box.
As far as your questions, from the first picture, the long cable is a transmission kick-down cable, the large canister looks like a headlight actuator, small canister with the bracket attached looks like a heat riser actuator. Someone will let me know if I am not correct on any of these.
Have fun with it!!!

Picture number 2. The arm is connected to the transmission kickdown. You have a bigger problem though. You are missing a carb bolt and the throttle linkage is missing a part. There is a bracket that holds the parts of the throttle cable. Thef uel pump should have a rubber hose connected to it and the metal fuel line should be close by on the frame. Most of those parts in picture 1 are worthless. the only thing that looks salvageable is the actuator. The thing tha tlooks like 2 pie plates together. That looks like a big project with a few parts missing. Pictures definitly help in "what is missing" syndrome.

Jordan,
Does this car run? Taking a closer look at that carb picture, I don't know how it could. Like Gordonm said, there is a carb bolt missing, the bracket for the accelerator cable is gone, there is no vacuum line going to the distributor and there are 3 vacuum lines missing off of the silver vacuum port that is between the carb and distributor. I would guess that the missing fuel line on the fuel pump should either go to the steel line on the frame or up to the carb.
I think Bubba has paid your car a visit....

Thanks Jeffery.....I pulled the seats out to clean the carpet, and I put the console back together. So, step one, baby steps, GOT IT! As far at the transmission cable, do you know where I could get the retainer to keep it from moving all over the place? I can't seem to find one. Its a 79, and Ill post full pics tomorrow when its sunny. I have the AIM and thats how I'm going right now....I usually research something pretty closely before I dive into it.

Thanks for your comment too Gordon. Im actually missing both carb bolts. I have to find a set of those as well. What part is the throttle linkage missing? Ill look closer for the fuel line tomorrow, I was getting backwards and upside down a little looking at the AIM pictures.

Thanks for all the replys!

Yea I knew this car needed alot of TLC when I got it. But the car itself is in amazing condition as far as rust and general wear and tear go that I couldnt pass it up. If i could figure out what is wrong (what everything is called so that I could reference it) I am very certain that I could get just about anything fixed with this AIM. My over arching goal is that I need it running by 22MAY because I am moving to VA and trailers are just too expensive to rent. I have the time to sacrifice, just need to know what to fix, you know. Im very happy that y'all can tell these things from the pictures.

Welcome to the forum: Most of your questions have been answered.

In the top picture:

The think at the top that looks like a horse shoe is the top ignition shield cover. It covers the distributor when it is installed.

Kick down cable as mentioned above.

Headlamp actuator (round can).

The bracket looks like a console mounting bracket I’m not sure. I really can’t tell from the picture.

The valve in the lower right hand side is the EFE or the control valve for the heat riser in your exhaust.

I would really suggest you get an assembly manual, the pictures I've posted came from this book and it will be a ton of help for you.

http://willcoxcorvette.com/product_i...ducts_id=25584

I did a photo shop on your pump picture and made it lighter. Yes this is the nipple for the S hose from the long fuel line.

Next I dug up the items that I could find quickly in the AIM and put a collage of pictures together that should answer some of your questions about where the parts go.

I'm guessing that the car hasn't run for a while due to all of the missing parts. Do the brakes work? Any fluid spots on the floor or on the inside of the wheels? If you are planning on driving any distance you better make sure the brakes are working properly. Check the condition of the radiator also. If there is yellow powdery buildup in the fins you might be in for a leak once the engine heats up.

You have ~5 weeks to get the car on the road. That means you should have it running within 3 weeks to give yourself a couple of weeks to sort out any problems that pop up.

You might want to post something about your upcoming trip in the Regional forums and see if you can line up some forum members who live near your travel route in case you run into any problems. Good luck.

Thanks Rick. The last thing that was done to the car before I took over it was the brakes. I was told they most the parts are brand new (calipers and what not) and I have tested them rolling the car off the trailer and they worked very well. I will do post in the Regional forum soon. Thank you for that tidbit of info. I hope I can get this all done in the three weeks, Im a little overwhelmed but very motivated. Hopefully one can cancel out the other!

You need the AIM on CD. You type in what you are looking for and it takes you to that page. This is how I found these pictures so quickly.

The paper version is ok, but you can't find anything. With the CD version you can find it, enlarge the pictures and print them if needed. Just a suggestion.

Jordan, I am a new owner also. I have torn down many things in my vette this past year. The one thing that I do is to take many digital pictures prior to and during the dismantling. It really helps in putting things back together. I have laid many grease marks on the carpet between the garage and the computer room.
