My engine is missing several bolts that I need to replace.
2 for the carb
all from EGR
various others....
is there anywhere where bolt sizes are posted so that I can fine these at a hardware store?
Or are most of them special order only...
Jordan...my advice is to test fit a few screws and figure the thread and depth...trial and error....i've found no place that spells out the sizes...the vendors want you to buy from them......btw, love Annapolis, went to school there and moving back this fall to Crofton probably...see you on the road!
I have one of those funny numbers too, except mine starts m09!!
I am about to graduate. I actually noticed your alpha about 4 weeks ago on another post. HAHA
I have been trial and error the whole time i just didnt know if there was a better way to go about it. Thank you for the advice..
Very respectfully,
Jordan
(the ending is a joke, i mean only if you want it to be....sir)
Your 79 is going to have metric bolts. You can buy thread guages - they look like feeler guages but have teeth on one side. The guage will easily tell what thread a bolt is and most of them will fit into a bolt hole to tell you at least what thread pitch you need. After a few trips to te store you will be able to judge by eye whether a bolt is a 6, 8, or 10mm.
BTW, make sure you buy a couple of torque wrenches - one for lb/ft-Newton-Meters and one for lb/in - Newton-Meters.
Hi Jordon,
If you want to get bolts and nuts that may be more similar in appearance to what may have been are your car originally you could try looking in the PARAGON and DR.REBUILD catalogues. They have a LOT of the small, odd ball parts on Corvettes. ZIP PRODUCTS in Virginia can help you too and you'll have the part the next day after you order.
Do you have the factory ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTION MANUAL and the GM CHASSIS SERVICE MANUAL for your car? They'll both be a big help to you.
Regards,
Alan
You may find the odd metric bolt on a 79,but not many in the engine itself.Your best bet is go to your local self serve type wrecking yard with a bucket and grab a variety of fasteners from 79 ish GM products.
The cars and trucks are different from the vette, but all the fasteners are pretty much universal within the Chevrolet family.
On a '79 they are definitely not metric. They both use 5/16" bolts (1/2" wrench). To figure out the length stick a small screwdriver in and measure its length and deduct 1/4" so it doesn't bottom out. I believe the EGR came with studs instead of bolts, but bolts will work.
