I am putting my car back together after about 2 years of sitting. I finally got to drive it around in the neighborhood a little to test her road worthiness and noticed a couple of things.
My main issue now is that the car will not turn off. it runs and drives fine but when the key is off, it keeps idling. If i hit the gas at that point, it will die.
i have the interior gutted now. so i noticed the little rod that goes from the key to the switch on top of the column. I am thinking that the switch may need to be adjusted forward. so here is my question.
does the steering column (tilt/tele) need to be removed to adjust or remove that switch? I could use any tips on this.
if i turn the key back hard it will kill the motor.
The switch is adjustable w/o taking the col out or down. Has two small cap screws 11/32 -7mm type heads. Loosen them and slide it which ever way it might need to go. Don't know if that is the problem--switch could be not making connection because it is bad. You can take the switch down and take a flat bladed screw driver and slide the slide part and see if it works that way OK. It's just tight working around the lower end of the column.
Good luck--
If you loosen the 2 bolts at the dash you can drop it a little and make some room. Don't remove the bolts completely and let it hang- that can damage the column.
IIRC, the bolts are on the left side of the column and you can get to them.
