They claim that they are "setting the standard for perfection", on their website. I thought perfection looks a little bit "more perfect"
Good luck, hope you get some of your money back

Did you see all this at their shop when you went to pick it up, or once you got it home?
Either way, BRING IT BACK and make them do it right, or threaten legal action.
As others said, what work, issues were listed in the estimate & contract?
Hope everything you originally pointed out is in it, and not just a conversation and a hand shake.
Either way you have every right to be unhappy, especially for that price!
Keep us posted, and good luck.

Did this painter actually say to you, "It will be $17k to paint your 1977 coupe??? Oh, and you have to put it back together."

"And take the rest of the tape off."

Was there a contract? Were there discussions about patrticulars? Were you involved in the process? Did he quote you $6k and hand you a bill for $17k?
with everything Steve said.

Please fill us in on exactly how this deal was made. Especially if $17k was the amount you agreed to up front.

I wouldn't be able to get the formula for the paint to you. The painter had "a hard drive crash" in March and "lost it", along with all of the bodywork and prep photos he had promised when we first met. I should have had it painted candy green, then I'd at least have an excuse when I have to repaint the whole car if I get creased.

I seriously felt like I couldn't move (ever have the thought that you'd get a car back with something in the paint you didn't want, such as graffiti?) - almost extortion. I've listed the laws he broke in claiming this was "killer" to him.

And for those that thought this was a "rushed" job - he had the car for a year and a half. That was just ridiculous.

The reason I don't is because he has a wife and kids and they shouldn't suffer because he's a cheating twit. I also have a marriage coming up, and cannot afford the time spent in legal proceedings prior to that event. I basically wanted to warn people that might end up looking for high quality paint - don't trust this one.

Joe
You show more integrity than the painter. I empathize: he had the car that long while you continued with your life and you get piecemealed paying against the work order expecting quality effort.

In general, the auto service industry is known to pull crap like this on the public. Who amongst us hasn't been ripped off at least once by some sob at a parts counter, wrecker service, garage, etc?

One big reason I have always enjoyed the specialty equipment and provider side of that business, is the integrity and business relationships people make out of them. I have made life friends with guys who had similar interests and practiced good ethics. I'm aware it's also a two-edged sword; many customers don't play nice either.

Sometimes, it's cheaper to walk away and take your lumps, especially if pursuing a court case only increases more $ outlay, not to mention more time. Again, who amongst us is burdened with too much of either? You have great evidence in the photos but would it be enough in court? Each situation may be different; not sure they all result in a solution to make you satisfied.

Thanks for the heads up on the painter. Ultimately, his family may end up paying the price if his business tactics/practices become well known; you'd wish they are not complicit to his way of making money. Hard to recover customers once the trust is lost and your reputation becomes well known.

Good Luck.

You should contact a lawyer to see how far you can go with posting like this. Post it on a few Street Rod sites since that's what he seems to be involved in most.

I had my Vette painted about 4 years ago. I had/have some of the same problems you have but I only paid $2800. That included stripping the entire car. I took it back once and after seeing his "repairs", I decided to cut my losses before he made it worse. If I had paid $16K for the same type paint job I got for $2800 I would have ben PO'd to say the least. Good luck trying to make it right. And for $16K I definitely would not say you are being "picky".

Sorry, this makes no sense to me. You are about to married... its OK to defraud your family because he's married with kids? John Wayne Gacy had a wife and kids too... do we just let people get away for stuff because they have a wife and kids? Not a good reason.

However... no contact, no quote (how does a painter "fail" to give a quote? The work should not begin without a quote)... as shoddy as this was, this could be tough to recover in court. Might not be worth paying a lawyer.

I would just go and talk to him and express your thoughts. I would give him a chance to correct it, long before I would threaten with a lawyer.

Have in mind what you are willing to accept from him, and ask him for it.

Good luck, sorry you are having to deal with this.

I feel bad for you, don't get me wrong, but almost $17K for a paint job, I would have parked it and bought a real clean original low miles car instead of spending that kind of money on a 77.

For what you paid I would expect perfection, you sure didn't get it. Having said that I would NEVER spend that kind of money on a paint job unless I was painting something VERY valuable...................

It is fair enough that you are picky, for that kind of money I would be picky too.

Sadly it is hard in this day and age to find any one that gives a s**t about the quality of work they do. That is why I try to do as much as I can myself, but yeah doing paint by yourself is a challenge esp. on a vette.

Good luck, try to work it out with him and get some of your money back before going for lawyers because the only winner there will be the lawyers.......

Did they strip to glass for 16K? Either way it seems like you were robbed. I've heard of C3's painted in lacquer for < 10K.

As for the 'quality' of work, I'd expect better from a high school shop class - full of punks.

$16k and 18 months to do it. This guy saw you comming. I hope you learned a lesson. If the shop can't give you a detailed estimate then you shouldn't let them touch your car. The quality of work is fair but for that kind of money it should be flawless.

Well if you look at their website they do a nice video of a burnout with a Silverado. I just wondered if that was a customers car.

For that kind of money I would be FECKING PIZZED, I grew up in a body shop and have seen better $2500.00 jobs! However you did this to yourself as well by not doing your homework.

ALWAYS research and get MULTIPLE quotes long before even THINKING of signing a contract.
