Not too bad. Dirty, but not bad. Take the spare carrier out- soak the two bolts on the straps with good penetrating oil- I use Hoppes#9 but lots of guys use PB Blaster. WD-40 is not the answer!
Disconnect the fuel sender wires. Soak the strap bolts. Drain the tank- bucket under the sender works well when you cut the fuel line (you need to replace it anyway) And do it OUTSIDE! Soak the bolts. On the left side of the tank, up high, is the vapor recovery line- cut it too- no sense fighting it off the nipple on the check valve (it's plastic!) Soak the strap bolts again. There is a light crossmenber with 4 bolts in it the front of the tank rests on it needs to come out too. Take the bolts out, push the straps out of the frame and yank the tank- it comes out toward the front.
Those are great instructions. My gas tank was already removed when i got my car. However, I did want to add one thing that may or may not be helpful.
From what I understand there is a felt paperish type material between the straps and the tank?.?. I took it a step further and encapsulated my tank straps in a rubber bicycle inner tube. First i lubed it up with wd40 and then threaded it trough the tube.
No rough edges... Some might think its a bad idea but it seemed like a good one to me at the time.
Good move! that felt is to keep the tank from squeaking. factory didn't use anything on the straps themselves, but the tank does set on that felt on both the front and rear supports.
for extra security I had a 77 that I put a manual fuel shut off on. It was right behind the right tail light.
Was thinking about putting in an electric one in my 75
so if it got stolen it wouldn't go very far....just onto the trailer : ) Mines not worth stealing.
it is definitely best to have another person help out. Kind of like one to hold it up there while another tightens bolts.....actually it will probably take both to hold it up in place while tightening the bolts. Good luck with the project!!
Pat, just a little FYI while you have your fuel lines loose and if you have access to a air compressor. Loosen the fuel lines in the front by the fuel pump and shoot some air though the lines, you will be surprised what comes out. Just my 2 cents.
