Return to "original"
Now, leaning towards the NCRS point of view, it's all coming off.
Searched for original parts to replace the chromed ones for about a month, pretty much have everything. Thankfully I kept all the exhaust and smog stuff and anything else ever removed from the Vette.
Did the top of the motor during the last week, removing the intake and valve covers and refinishing them. Turned out great. Even still had all the original vacuum hoses to put back on. Waiting for CC to send some minor parts, one of them an EFE switch that screws into the original thermostat housing. Get that installed and it gets moved to the lift for teardown.
Everything is pretty much clean so it's fun working on it, everything comes right apart. Like I did before, I'll remove the oil pan and then jack up the motor, remove the motor mounts, and refinish the underside of the block. Reinstall the original pan and touch up the paint along the bolt rails. No need to pull the motor.
Here's the topside done. When I did this I wasn't planning to keep going right now. But got ambitious and feel like getting it all finished. All the "new" parts are all sandblasted and painted and ready to go.

Will post pics of the final product. I'm only a little disappointed that it will probably look better than original!

That's actually the original alternator, chrome plated

Looking for a correct numbered one.
The front of the motor hasn't been touched yet, it's just that clean.

Wrong dates, crazy sellers, yikes. I bought correct, properly dated alternators for my 2 '63s out of the catalog, but not so easy with the '69 for some reason! Finally got lucky.Smog equipment is also a treat.
Haven't had any of my present ones judged yet, but I feel they're qualified, especially the 2 78s. My opinion they're better than the past 78SA. Not ready to spend the $400(?) to have any judged, tho.
This 79 I'm reworking now might be too nice under the hood and lose points for that!
Finding a 79 alternator hopefully will be a little easier than finding one for an earlier C3. Found one pretty quick for the 78SA. That alternator had a 79 date but was the wrong number. I've assumed it was a warranty replacement when the Vette was new. May throw that one on the 79 in place of the chrome one just to be a little closer to correct.
Kept all the smog stuff. Unwrapping it from the bubble wrap was like Christmas!
Was up late last night stripping everything off the 79. Got a pile to sandblast and paint, chrome to sell, and chrome with enough pits in it that I won't sell. Probably just throw it in a box til it gets tossed when I'm dead!
Dual exhaust came apart as if it was installed last week, surprised me. Little blasting and paint and it'll get posted for sale.
