Im replacing my 350 275 hp engine with a 383 stroker 400 hp in my 77, question is I have a stock rear, do I need to upgrade or make any changes? Trans is a 69 Muncie 4 speed.
PS If theres any interest in my current engine it will soon be available.
It depends on what you plan to do with the new motor. Traction is what breaks the rear parts not HP. I have seen 400 HP motors on slicks blow them up and I have seen 600 HP motors on street tires live a long life. I have upgraded my rear using mostly stock parts but set it up correctly to try and make it live. I have 3 inch half shafts also. I take it apart and check just about every year. This year I found one of the stub axles was starting to twist. I replaced it before it got to far gone. With a stick the rear takes more abuse but at the 400 HP level you should be OK as long as sticky tires are not used at the strip.

THe car will be strickly part time street. Mostly for sunny day cruising and shows.
I put a 400+ hp 383 in my 79 about 2 maybe 3 summers ago. I haven't had any trouble "yet" with the stock rear. I did make a few passes with some slicks at the track as well and it held up fine. However I still plan to put a dragvette kit on it better safe the sorry.
